Scientists: Social Media Is Not Necessarily a Waste of Time

Scientists: Social Media Is Not Necessarily a Waste of Time | AAEEBL -- Social Media, Social Selves | Scoop.it

When it comes to social media, there seem to be two schools of thought in the science/research community. One posits that spending time on social media can be extremely useful. The other posits that spending time on social media is stupid.

I LOVE the idea of connecting current students to pre-service teachers via chat rooms. I think the potential anonymity for both could facilitate some real, honest dialogue about what's working and what isn't working in the classroom.

7 Things You Should Know About Social Content Curation | EDUCAUSE.edu

7 Things You Should Know About Social Content Curation | EDUCAUSE.edu | AAEEBL -- Social Media, Social Selves | Scoop.it

An emerging class of online tools, including Pinterest, Scoop.it, EduClipper, and others, allows users to quickly and easily gather, organize, and share collections of online resources, particularly visual content. These applications make it easy to collect and post disparate bits of content, providing visual groupings at a glance that can reveal important patterns. In academic settings, they can facilitate more visual thinking and discussion among students while providing a means to share collections of online content.

The 7 Things You Should Know About... series from the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) provides concise information on emerging learning technologies. Each brief focuses on a single technology and describes what it is, where it is going, and why it matters to teaching and learning. Use these briefs for a no-jargon, quick overview of a topic and share them with time-pressed colleagues.

Interesting take on a few forms of curation that can be used.  Infographic is, as the creator remarked, a little crowded, however the information is useful.

It was another busy week in social media!

Facebook announced Graph Search and new rules for cover photos on Fan Pages.

Google+ released a new feature allowing users to choose to keep their activity in Communities separate from their profiles.

LinkedIn is getting rid of one of his most important areas.

Twitter added a new feature to its official site -- and you  probably missed it!

101 Tweet-Tastic Tools for 2013

101 Tweet-Tastic Tools for 2013 | AAEEBL -- Social Media, Social Selves | Scoop.it

As much as I love Twitter, I have to admit I haven’t seen that familiar blue Twitter home page in quite a while. Why? because although Twitter is amazing, I can only fully leverage it by using a range of Twitter tools.

I’ve written several blog posts on Socialable about some of my favorite and most used Twitter tools but I thought it would be a good idea to create a series of 101 of the top social media and blogging tools.  So here is the first in the series – and it made sense to start with Twitter seeing as it’s my social media “weapon of choice” and generates over 50% of the traffic to Socialable.

101 herramientas para Tuitear: un buen repaso de casi todas las aplicaciones útiles que hay por ahí.... y a todas estas, ¿qué herramienta le echas en falta al twitter?

Eduardo Area Sacristan's curator insight, March 14, 2013 11:40 AM

Insights Into the Hot Trend of Social Media Content Curation

Insights Into the Hot Trend of Social Media Content Curation | AAEEBL -- Social Media, Social Selves | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article:

"Online content curation is a hot trend as business owners and professionals realize that content is vital to add value to their customers and prospects.

The trend was already evident in 2011 but 2012 saw an outright explosion of the phenomenon.

Content curation is the art of selecting content that is appropriate and then organising and publishing it in a way that is relevant for the topic of choice.

Editors with the aid of journalists create and collect content then edit and then publish.
Journalism is shifting more and more from the quest for the perfect “scoop” to a more organized and reasoned activity of content curation.

The technology of the web and the rise of the social media networks is providing sources of content that can provide curation in ways that were not previously possible.
The content curation platform Scoop.it is an example how we can all become magazine editors and content curators without the overhead of hiring editors or journalists. Scoop.it was established in 2011 with the goal of making content curation easy and accessible to everyone...."
