Bit if a tangent for this post, but as Open Badges aren't well catered for in Google Apps and I have had to explore workarounds for Chromebooks, relevant!

I'm attending an Open Badges meetup in London next week to talk about recognising the skills of digital leaders.  I'm really excited to have been invited because as a Trust we really want to develop and enhance the role of digital leaders and have them link between academies and work together.  I'm also looking forward to it because much as I love the idea of Open Badges, I find the published info and material a bit of a labyrinth of technical geekery and frankly I haven't had time to decode it.

I got my head around storing badges and publishing them after some mucking about over Christmas - if you use beta.openbadges.org it isn't difficult to open an account there (using your Google ID perhaps) and have a place to receive and share your badges.  This is my current crop of awards - not too impressive I'm afraid!

I've added a link to my backpack to my email signature to use at Eastfield and The Arbours which seems to be a nice and simple way to display them although it would be way, way more fun to have the row of badges at the bottom much like many school letterheads became....

Social Media applications have been using badges as recognition and awards for some time now. Lately the location based application like FourSquare have been more aggressive. This reviewer can see how open online courseware could adopt Badges as interim solutions to awarding grades or certificates until there is a more rational accreditation process. Or perhaps, the badges will build enough street cred that we won't need to parchment or sheep skin to prove our worth.
