Writing screenplay description with personal style - chip street

Writing screenplay description with personal style - chip street | A Writer's Notebook | Scoop.it

Screenplays aren’t Literature.

If there’s one core screenwriting truth you’re supposed to learn as soon as possible, that’s it. All the stuff that made your fiction writing awesome, all the flowery language, the detailed descriptions, and lengthy internal dialogues are anathema to the script. That two page treatise on your protagonists 1970′s wardrobe and its roots in a painful high school career fraught with bullying and inattentive parents? Fuggedaboudit. What got you gold stars in creative writing will get you tossed at page one by an intern at insertprodcohere.

Neil Gaiman on Why Scary Stories Appeal to Us, the Art of Fear in Children’s Books, and the Most Terrifying Ghosts Haunting Society | A Writer's Notebook | Scoop.it

"Fear is a wonderful thing, in small doses."

Neil Gaiman — prolific author, champion of the creative life, disciplined writer, sage of literature — is one of the greatest storytellers of our time. At TED 2014 in Vancouver, he hosted a semi-secret late-night event where he read a ghost story and a brilliant short essay titled “Ghost in the Machine,”contemplating the psychology of why scary stories speak to us so powerfully, followed by a brief Q&A.

Writing Longhand

Writing Longhand | A Writer's Notebook | Scoop.it

One thing I’ve found with my writing is that my process tends to change or adapt through the years.  It’s important to find what works, what helps us be more productive, and stick with that. Clearly, different approaches will work for different writers.

A big change has been switching over from writing longhand to writing on a laptop.

Motivating Your Inner Writer

Motivating Your Inner Writer | A Writer's Notebook | Scoop.it

You’re writing your story, maybe you’re a few days in or perhaps a few weeks, and suddenly you feel the compulsion to do the dishes. Or the laundry. Or tidy up that closet. And if, like me, you aren’t overly fond of housework or tedious chores, it may occur to you that it’s rather odd that you now feel compelled to do something you dislike rather than do the thing you’ve loved since you were a kid.

There is in fact a pretty simple reason why, and once you understand it, it can actually make it easier to get your head back in the game.
