Andromeda Media Group: Snow Crashing

Andromeda Media Group: Snow Crashing | A Virtual Worlds Miscellany | Scoop.it

Cut the apron strings already. Second Life isn’t your bread and butter. The entire purpose of Open Simulator was to cut those strings and do something better without constantly having to ask permission from Linden Lab. Now you have the chance, and after a few years of sitting on the fence about it, you are no longer given a choice. You can either rally together and build a true Metaverse, or you can let the open source end of things stall and rot in obscurity.

Andromeda Media Group: Raptor-Jesus was CEO | A Virtual Worlds Miscellany | Scoop.it

Either they were building an amazing foundation for the Metaverse or they’ve spent 9 years making a lackluster games development platform when compared to every other games development platform available.

You’ll have to excuse me for remaining positive about this and choosing to believe that they were making an amazing Metaverse platform and not a lackluster game development platform.

Why Anyone Who Cares About the Metaverse Needs to Move Beyond Second Life; Now, Not Later | Fleep's Deep Thoughts | A Virtual Worlds Miscellany | Scoop.it

Linden Lab is pivoting, as they like to say in start-up land, and they’re pivoting to gamers. They’re no more interested in expanding or creating the metaverse than EA or Blizzard is, the only world changing thing they are aiming for now is better monetization of the entertainment and virtual goods sector.

The grid divide: Dolphin ceases OpenSim support

The grid divide: Dolphin ceases OpenSim support | A Virtual Worlds Miscellany | Scoop.it

The option to fork development between SL and OpenSim probably comes down to matters of bandwidth, maintenance and audience. Does a TPV have the bandwidth to develop two flavours of viewer? Does it enjoy a sufficiently largely audience in both SL and OpenSim to warrant the time and effort needed to do so?

Radegast has been around since 2009 and was originally a very light viewer with no visual detailing, more a text based client that allowed for people to interact from one space. This made it easy for people on the go to perform necessary tasks like customer issues, and being in world for meetings etc but without using all the resources needed for a regular viewer. Fiachra often logged in on this viewer to just chat, and would stand on our then platform and not be able to see himself or anything around him. All of that has changed over the years, and Radegast has an incredible amount of power now, but is still light weight for those unable to always run Second Life at full capacity.

One caveat, however. Just because each region can hold up to 100,000 prims, don’t expect to have 1.6 million prims on your 16-region world. Instead, those 100,000 prims now get distributed across all sixteen regions.

Although I’m a human being, although I have written for leading UK publications like The Guardian, although I’ve been quoted on books (both non-fiction and academic literature), well, I’ve been kicked out of Facebook and I’m not allowed on Google+. In spite of being a perfectly normal human being, I’m excluded from social media. Why? Because I refuse to post a real life picture of myself on Facebook/Google+.
