Never Too Young To Code

Never Too Young To Code | A Reader's Retort | Scoop.it
Coding brings young children rich opportunities for language development and the “notion of learning from mistakes,” says Chip Donohue, the dean of distance learning and continuing education at the Erikson Institute in Chicago, a graduate school in child development. “We actually don’t do enough of that with young kids.” The sequencing and patterns involved in programming reinforce skills that have always been taught in the early years, but now also create “habits of mind that are essential for the 21st century,” adds Donohue, also senior fellow at the Fred Rogers Center, which provides resources and information on media use with young children. When children code together, they are also learning from each other.

“In the process of learning to code, people learn many other things. They are not just learning to code, they are coding to learn,” Mitchel Resnick, professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab, wrote in an EdSurge article. “In addition to learning mathematical and computational ideas (such as variables and conditionals), they are also learning strategies for solving problems, designing projects, and communicating ideas.” Resnick adds that these skills are useful to everyone “regardless of age, background, interests, or occupation.”

San Antonio Launches Bibliotech Library Kiosks at Area Bus Stations | The Digital Reader

San Antonio Launches Bibliotech Library Kiosks at Area Bus Stations | The Digital Reader | A Reader's Retort | Scoop.it
Bexar County Public Library got a lot of press coverage several years ago when it opened its book-less Bibliotech library branch, and now it is taking the show on the road. The local ABC station and the Rivard Report reported yesterday that VIA Metropolitan Transit, the local buss company, is installing six Bibliotech kiosks in bus stations around San Antonio. Bexar County and VIA are making it easier than ever to take part in their "Ride & Read" initiative. There are plenty of advantage to taking public transportation so why not use the time to get into a good book? That’s the message VIA is sending out to its riders in their latest attempt to connect the community. They’re partnering with Bexar County and their Bibliotech program. "You don’t have to be the driver and pay attention to the traffic, so a great use of your time is to sit back and read and catch up on things," said Jeffrey Arndt, president and CEO of VIA Metropolitan Transit. You can see a kiosk in the lead photo, which was taken by Kathryn Boyd-Batstone. The kiosks are located at VIA's Downtown Information Center, Centro Plaza, Ellis Alley Transit Center, North Star Transit Center, Medical Center Transit Center, and Crossroads Park & [...]

Interesting!

Awaken Librarian's comment, September 20, 9:29 AM
I absolutely support this initiative. Just like librarians are trying to debunk the "Marian, Librarian" stereotype of shushing prudes, tenure professors need to dust off their statuesque behavior and progress with the technological times. Too often I find that complacency is the rut of university staff. Keeping their nose to the ground on connecting their works with students can't do anything but enhance progress all the way around.
