WorkSafe NZ has released "best practice guidelines" on workplace bullying.  Best practice is a nonsense term but this guide is a major step above similar guides in Australia, in particular. Definit...
Elisa Mestroni's insight:

In this blog the writer Kevin Jones discusses the similarities and differences between the Safe Work Australia and the recently released Worksafe New Zealand workplace bullying guides. Interestingly he asserts the follow about the New Zealand guide; ‘The guide may not be “best practice” but it is a lot more mature than recent guides in Australia. It deserves international attention.’ He has certainly raised some quality and thought provoking arguments.

Guide-preventing-responding-workplace-bullying.pdf

Elisa Mestroni's insight:

From my research I believe that the primary duty of care remains the responsibility of the Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU), and it is their legal obligation to resolve issues regarding bullying. However, it is the function of OHS to report hazards or potential hazards in the workplace. OHS professionals can provide advice to both the worker and the company and make recommendations on prevention and response procedures associated with workplace bullying.

rr060.pdf

Elisa Mestroni's insight:

A significant study that investigates in part the causality of work related stress and workplace accidents. I think the jury might still be out on a conclusive correlation between the two, but it stands to reason that if you are stressed and distracted at work you could be more susceptible to having an accident.

Health and Safety Industry Survey 2014

Health and Safety Industry Survey 2014 | A quest-ion of safety | Scoop.it

Survey of health and safety professionals reveals the drivers and barriers to effective health and safety implementation in American workplaces.

Elisa Mestroni's insight:

Although this survey was conducted in the United States I would be fascinated to know if similar results would be obtained here in Australia. I would especially be interested in whether ‘employees attitudes are seen as a primary obstacle to putting health and safety practices into effect’, as was reported in this case. Also interesting to note is that stress along with overwork and back strain is one of the most overlooked concerns in the workplace.

Bullying – Brodie's Law - Department of Justice, Victoria

Elisa Mestroni's insight:

After the suicide of a young women, the perpetrators of the bullying that ultimately led to her death were only convicted and fined under the existing Occupational Health and Safety Act. Alec Meikle killed himself after relentless bullying, inquest hears

Alec Meikle killed himself after relentless bullying, inquest hears | A quest-ion of safety | Scoop.it
A teenage apprentice killed himself after allegedly being subjected to relentless, violent bullying by his work supervisor and colleagues that turned him into "a hollow boy", the Coroner's Court has heard.
Elisa Mestroni's insight:

The tragic story of a young man who took his own life after enduring bullying in the workplace. It goes to show that there are not only physical hazards but also psychological hazards in the workplace and even if a company has an anti-bullying policy, a paper policy is arbitrary unless the policy is enforced.
