"I had to move back home after having a rough summer where assisting work and shooting work was extremely slow and I had no savings because my overhead was so high with student loans, rent, insurance, etc. Moving back home was my last resort and I felt like a failure for a bit. After beginning the project and realizing how many others were out there like me, it was clear that I needed to bring this story to light and share the experience of the “Boomerang Kids,” including my own story."

"Writing a book about contemporary photography is a bit of a thankless task since the moment it’s published, there already is something else that is not included in the book. But completeness cannot be the goal of such books. Inevitably, something will be missing, for whatever reason. There will probably also be categories, resulting in debates whether artist XYZ should not have in fact been placed elsewhere, or whether some category might be missing."

4 INDICATORS THAT OUTLINE THE DECLINE OF IMAGE LICENSING AS WE KNOW IT

The annual conference CEPIC recently took place in Berlin, where international photo libraries congregate primarily to seek distribution for their images and/or image collections to represent for their clients

Mario Pires's curator insight, June 27, 5:21 AM

"The state of transactional image licensing is one of continued irrelevance — there’s a reason why Shutterstock has gained marketshare, and why new offerings crop up that look nothing like their predecessors. A whole new generation has been educated on what image acquisition means, and its expectations on everything from price, use, and point of access are far afield from the realities of years past. This generation, as well, is defining a reality that is broader in scope than image licensors can envision."

Mario Pires's curator insight, May 13, 11:32 AM

"The old idea that photography should just show things as they are still holds sway to a great extent in the documentary community, and to be sure it still makes perfect sense in certain circumstances just to show. But showing the surface of something extremely complex often isn’t a very effective way to get us to understand it, because often we simply end up repeating what we already know, or think we know."

Mario Pires's curator insight, April 30, 6:01 AM

"I mention the festival as during my visit I realized something about photographic series. It seems they exist in five formats: Chronologies, Typologies, Portfolios, Catalogues and Narratives. The formats are not related to the contents of the series or the photographs, each of these can be both fiction as well as nonfiction. These five formats are that: formats, they don’t say much about the contents of the work, but about the way they transmit that contents to the viewer."
