Why Spam Is Bad For Your Business | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

Now, you might think that anyone with a blog or website would know how inappropriate and annoying spam comments are, but a few of them sincerely seemed unaware that what they’d done was poor form. So here’s my quick attempt to educate folks on the subject.

Leaving spam comments isn’t just poor form — it’s a poor thing to do for many reasons.

First of all, despite what some poor &/or ignorant marketing folks will tell — and sell — you, spam links are not good for SEO

Does Website Speed Affect Your Ranking? (infographic)

Does Website Speed Affect Your Ranking? (infographic) | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it
Have you ever been to a slow site and it felt like it took hours to load? You look down at your computer clock and really only 30 seconds have gone by. That's just the user experience on a slow site- the real question is “Does your website speed effect your ranking?”
Will your slightly slower site be penalized by Google and other search engines when you clients are even looking for you?
In this easy to understand graphic, we see that 1 second makes all the difference in the world. And after just 6 short weeks of poor load times, your site can lose 75% of it’s traffic to that page.
If you have a low ranking you might want to follow some of the Google Guidelines to pre-load your most popular pages to increase your site’s overall performance.

Google Ranking Factors: A Discreetly Cleaner, More Social Web & An Ever Dominating Search Engine

Google Ranking Factors: A Discreetly Cleaner, More Social Web & An Ever Dominating Search Engine | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

Recently, Search Metrics released a white paper on their findings for Google’s SEO Ranking Factors in 2013. It displays the correlation between particular metrics such as ‘Facebook Likes’ and ‘Backlinks’ and the rank ability of a page within Google.

Also available in the 70 page document are comparisons with 2012’s data, where that data is available. Not to many marketers surprise, a lot has changed. According to Search Metrics, it’s time to get social! In this article I graze upon some of the most important areas as well as my thoughts on what Google is playing it – for better and worse.

The data from search metrics is based on research and is not 100% factual. Nor are my opinions factual, but rather opinions and statements based on what I believe to be happening.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Personally, people who practiced "the old SEO", who didn't think of this "new" stuff, were missing out then too. It's never a really good idea to focus on being a cog to the exclusion of the process and purpose of the whole well-oiled machine.

I have found that there are tons and tons of strategies to SEO. Some beginners that enter are just bewildered by the amount of information they feel is needed to be learned.
Gaurav Pandey's comment, May 11, 2013 7:35 PM
Hi David, I feel it's the same for marketing, if not more overwhelming. However, going forward we will see a lot of overlap between the two roles and it's probably not going to affect those who are really good at SEO, but a lot of people with intermediate-advanced knowledge who call themselves SEO pro's will surely come under the pump as a marketing expert could acquire intermediate SEO skills if he has to.

How To Do News Curation Without Having Problems with Duplicate Content

How To Do News Curation Without Having Problems with Duplicate Content | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you have been resisting the idea of curating news content on your web site because you are afraid of being penalized for having "duplicate" content, this article will shed some light on what is best to do to avoid it.

By working with titles, writing intros and commentaries to curated posts, linking out to relevant and credible sources, you have many variables at your disposal to make curation work for you, rather than against you.

Just follow the good advice contained in this good article by Josh Cunningham (author of the WP-Drudge for link and news aggregation) and you will be OK. It's the same approach I use to curate all my news channels. It does work.

Informative. Useful. 8/10

The Importance of Content Marketing When Building SEO Strategies [Infographic]

The Importance of Content Marketing When Building SEO Strategies [Infographic] | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

Earlier this month, Mai wrote an article about why you should put content marketing at the heart of your brand strategy, in which she gives a summary of the importance of content marketing for your brand.

However, she also mentions that even though 90% of marketers think content marketing will become more important over the next year, more than 60% still haven’t invented a content marketing strategy at place.

Some interesting key facts from the infographic are:

The most popular types of content that marketers spend time on producing are blog posts, social media updates (Facebook posts, tweets, etc.) and articles/guides, whereas audio content and podcasts are the least popular;

Search engine providers are increasingly recognizing quality creation and social sharing as significant ranking factors;

27 million pieces of content are shared via the web each and every day in 2012;

More than 50 % of consumers say that blogs have influenced their purchase decisions;

94 % of marketers believe that the users analysis of the site’s perceived value will increase in importance as a ranking factor.

Google’s And Bing’s Search Strategies Diverge

Google’s And Bing’s Search Strategies Diverge | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

"Not too long ago, Google and Bing seemed fully focused on adding as many social features to their search engines as possible.

For Google, that meant adding lots of Google+ features and for Bing it meant making the best out of its exclusive relationship with Facebook. Since then, though, it seems the two search engines’ strategies have changed, with Google slowly deemphasizing social search and Bing going all in by adding more social features than ever".

Google Launches SERP Menus

Google Launches SERP Menus | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

Yesterday afternoon Google’s search engine results page (SERP) included clickable menus for select websites. [1] Here is a screenshot: If you click on a menu item, it loads another group of links.

Why would Google include menus in its search results and what are the implications for searchers, advertisers, and website owners?

First, these menus produce a better experience for searchers. You can quickly find the most relevant pages from within Google’s search results.

This saves you time. This feature also benefits advertisers and Google. If users are spending more time browsing Google’s search results they are probably more likely to see and click on a sponsored result. Higher click-through rates on ads equates to more revenue for Google.

Tweets do affect Rankings [Study]

Tweets do affect Rankings [Study] | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

From the original article: "In the biggest study of its kind, we have found that there is strong correlation between the amount of tweets about a URL, and its Google ranking.

Key Stats

1) Study shows that URLs receive a significant boost in Google rankings when they are shared on Twitter

2) The effects of this boost seem to level out at around 50 tweets, and the subsequent benefit of gaining additional tweets is minimal until around 5,000 tweets

3) After 5,000 tweets the average ranking of URLs improves considerably
URLs receiving over 7,500 tweets almost always rank inside the top 5 results

4) Average rankings are heavily correlated to the number of tweets about each URL".

Social Annotations in Search: Now Your Social Network = Rankings

Social Annotations in Search: Now Your Social Network = Rankings | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

From The Original Article: "For years, the best way to gain rankings in search results was to have:

1) Accessible pages featuring
2) Quality content
3) Targeting the right keywords
4) In a way that naturally earned external links

Now a huge social reach is a competitive advantage in SEO. If you're doing SEO today, I think it's no longer possible to ignore the growth of your social connections as a big part of your SEO strategy.

Honestly, I expect in 18 months, Twitter followers, Facebook connections, LinkedIn account size and engagement across these won't just be social metrics; they'll be KPIs for our SEO, too".
