To Really Remember Something, Don't Take Pictures Of It | PHOTO - MEMORY

To Really Remember Something, Don't Take Pictures Of It | PHOTO - MEMORY | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it

"[....] When people rely on technology to remember for them — counting on the camera to record the event and thus not needing to attend to it fully themselves — it can have a negative impact on how well they remember their experiences,” she explains. [...)"

Monica MIRZA's insight:

Pictures help remember past events (people, places...) though ! As a calculator might "weaken" our own calculating abilities, would taking pictures decrease our ability to remember ? I'd never considered the issue from that point of view -paradoxical, yet it might well be true...

Amazing Microscope Shots | PHOTOS | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it
These microscope pictures are taken from the book ' Microcosmos', created by Brandon Brill
Monica MIRZA's insight:

The book displays many scanning electron microscope (SEM) images : insects, human body parts and household items -all too small to see with the naked eye.

Unlike the picture above, most of them show something we cannot identify unless we read the corresponding caption...

10 Coney Island PHOTOS that make it look... | USA / NYC | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it
Don't get us wrong, we love Coney Island. But between all the hot dog remnants, back tattoos and children traumatized from The Cyclone, we wouldn't exactly call the atmosphere idyllic.
Monica MIRZA's insight:

The above makes me think of Paris Beaubourg's Art Centre... the pipes are way thinner though ;-)

"The Mountain" - Time-lapse PHOTOGRAPHY | TSO Photography

"The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I [TSO Photography] know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. [...]"

Monica MIRZA's insight:

El Teide (filmed in April 2011) is Spain´s highest mountain (3718m) : one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars. It hosts Teide Observatories,  which is considered one of the world´s best observatories.

A dazzling time-lapse movie :-)

A Photographer’s Nod to Matisse

A Photographer’s Nod to Matisse | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it

"For Daniel Gordon’s latest series “The Green Line”, the artist used photography and collage as tools to create works referenced from Matisse’s well-known 1905 portrait of his wife titled “The Green Stripe” (La Raie Verte).

Monica MIRZA's insight:

"“I’m interested in taking ideas that were radical in Matisse’s day (collapsing space through the blending of foreground and background, multiple angles viewed at the same time, and Fauvist color and expression, among others) and moving them into a contemporary photographic space,” Gordon wrote via email"

HowStuffWorks "10 Important Photography Terms"

HowStuffWorks "10 Important Photography Terms" | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it
There are many important photography terms that will help you understand the art. Visit HowStuffWorks to learn 10 important photography terms.
Monica MIRZA's insight:

All the more useful than these terms are explained in plain English ;o)

Check this one :

"White balance

reveals an interesting difference between a camera and a human eye : a human eye has a human brain attached. When you look at a white object, your brain is actually interpreting the lighting cues around you and calculating that the object is white on the fly. If the object is under a blue light, it will really look blue, but your brain compensates for the color difference, so you'll see it as white.

The camera does no such compensating unless you force it to do so, so if a white object is under a bluish light, the camera will record bluish pixels.

Adjusting white balance helps force the camera to compensate for the fact that most lighting conditions aren't perfectly white.

Many indoor lights have a yellowish tinge to them, while fluorescent lights have a bluish tint. Even natural light is a little bluer than you might think."

The best weird and odd pictures from around the world
Monica MIRZA's insight:

At first I thought the pic had been 'photoshopped', but it hadn't...

These genetically modified strawberries are "pineberries" that look like strawberries as far as shape is concerned. Yet, their red has turned to white and  their pips' yellow-green... to red ! Besides, they're said to taste like pineapples.

Such ice-age faded colour definitely contrasts with the 'classic' strawberry's red -guess which I'd rather crunch ? :o).

Visual Transactions

Since 2006, when Facebook became available to the general public, the visual practices of its users, especially the youngest ones, have been described as forms of narcissistic behavior. By analyzing the use of images in dating, this essay reconstructs what users actually do online and reveals a very different picture. From searching for profiles to deciphering their content, the practices observed make utilitarian use of the photographs, which are interpreted as indices and drive a highly pragmatic approach. The multitude of personal sources and the diversity of their content impart a great informational importance to the images, which are nonetheless carefully analyzed, with weight also given to other interactions. This exploration of the sharing and reception of images on networks highlights their transactional value, which encourages behaviors distinguished by reciprocity.

daguerrotype, print, photo
Monica MIRZA's insight:

"The urge to modify camera images is as old as photography itself—only the methods have changed. Nearly every type of manipulation we now associate with digital photography was also part of the medium's pre-digital repertoire: smoothing away wrinkles, slimming waistlines, adding people to a scene (or removing them)—even fabricating events that never took place."
