Amazing Microscope Shots | PHOTOS

Amazing Microscope Shots | PHOTOS | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it
These microscope pictures are taken from the book ' Microcosmos', created by Brandon Brill
Monica MIRZA's insight:

The book displays many scanning electron microscope (SEM) images : insects, human body parts and household items -all too small to see with the naked eye.

Unlike the picture above, most of them show something we cannot identify unless we read the corresponding caption...

10 Coney Island PHOTOS that make it look... | USA / NYC | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it
Don't get us wrong, we love Coney Island. But between all the hot dog remnants, back tattoos and children traumatized from The Cyclone, we wouldn't exactly call the atmosphere idyllic.
Monica MIRZA's insight:

The above makes me think of Paris Beaubourg's Art Centre... the pipes are way thinner though ;-)

On Jacques Lacan's behalf, in 1955 André Masson covered Gustave Courbet's "The Origin of the World" with a surrealist painting ("Terra Erotica").

80 years before, Courbet had already been led led to hide his artwork with a winter landscape, "Le Château de Blonay".

Photo Collage of the Sun - NASA | by M. ZHANG

Photo Collage of the Sun - NASA | by M. ZHANG | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it

Posted by Michael Zhang on July 8, 2013 •

"Our sun can look very different in photographs depending on the wavelength of light you’re trying to capture. [...] NASA recently took a collection of sun photos shot at different wavelengths and combined them into the beautiful photo collage seen above (here’s a higher-res version).

The photographs in the collage were all captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) — the same project that created the “3 years in 3 minutes” time-lapse of the sun that we shared back in April."

The Observer's 20 photographs of the week

"A poster depicting former South African president Nelson Mandela hangs on barbed wire as a Palestinian protester flees teargas fired by Israeli soldiers during clashes at a weekly demonstration against Jewish settlements at Bilin, near Ramallah, in the West Bank."

Monica MIRZA's insight:

The Guardian Observer photo gallery displays its weekly favourite shots.

The first of the gallery 20 photos  is dazzling -go and check :-)

But I've rather  scooped the above for it's incredibly full of contrasts and paradox. Definitely shows though Mandela's walk to freedom mostly succeeded, loads of steps still need to be walked all over the world...

Map of 10,000 Tweets shows New York City at Work

Map of 10,000 Tweets shows New York City at Work | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it

"

What does where we tweet say about how we live and work? That's one of the questions Oakland-based programmer Eric Fischer hoped to answer with his latest mapping project. [...] The project lays out around 10,000 geotagged tweets and 30,000 point-to-point trips in cities like New York City to plot the flow of people in terms of favored paths. In his map of NYC, seen above, there is a huge ink blot lining Broadway; as we've long suspected, it looks like the busy avenue is the backbone of the city. [...]

Who Did What to Our Logo

Who Did What to Our Logo | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it
How designers reimagined our logo for the Innovation Issue cover.
Monica MIRZA's insight:

"You should have seen the letters we received in 1967 when the newspaper’s legendary design director, Louis Silverstein, decided to remove the period at the end of The New York Times logo, which had been there for 116 years. [...] We asked eight designers to re-imagine the logo. Four ended up on four different covers, and another four ran inside the issue. We also have 10 additional sketches. Here, the designers describe how they approached the assignment."
