If used correctly, a horizon will either add to a composition or go unnoticed, however, if positioned poorly, it can become a competing element, distracting attention away from the main areas of interest. For Daniel Gordon’s latest series “The Green Line”, the artist used photography and collage as tools to create works referenced from Matisse’s well-known 1905 portrait of his wife titled “The Green Stripe” (La Raie Verte).
Perhaps this feeling–of being overcome by the vastness of space as well as the triumph of human civilization–is what awes us about satellite images of cities at night.
