"View of Toledo" | El Greco

"View of Toledo" | El Greco | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it
Monica MIRZA's insight:

"[...] El Greco portrays the city he lived and worked in for most of his life. The painting belongs to the tradition of emblematic city views, rather than a faithful documentary description. The view of the eastern section of Toledo from the north would have excluded the cathedral, which the artist therefore imaginatively moved to the left of the Alcázar [...]".

A gorgeous painting -I only knew the painter's portraits and somehow find this landscape most modern...

A masked origin of the world | PAINTING | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it
Monica MIRZA's insight:

On Jacques Lacan's behalf, in 1955 André Masson covered Gustave Courbet's "The Origin of the World" with a surrealist painting ("Terra Erotica").

80 years before, Courbet had already been led led to hide his artwork with a winter landscape, "Le Château de Blonay".

The Magnifying Glass - Roy LICHTENSTEIN | US painting

The Magnifying Glass - Roy LICHTENSTEIN | US painting | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it

"[...] Magnifying glass.

Surreal painted landscapes merged with bodies | Moki

Surreal painted landscapes merged with bodies | Moki | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it

We recently stumbled upon Moki's surreal landscapes on My Modern Met and felt as if we were whisked off into a dream. The Berlin-based artist depicts human beings wrapped up in the fabric of nature. [...] Moki was raised in a small town in Germany surrounded by the woods, allowing her youthful imagination to run wild. The artist, inspired by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, explained how her childhood fantasies continue to shape her artistic practice [...]"

Edvard Munch : Angst-ridden artist or canny businessman ? | The Independent

Edvard Munch : Angst-ridden artist or canny businessman ? | The Independent | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it

One of the most celebrated paintings by Edvard Munch will go on display alongside a later version of it this month, as part of a major new exhibition of the Norwegian's work.

"Mr Cullinan said it was impossible to tell whether Munch reworked so many of his paintings because he was trying to work through some kind of psychological trauma or obsession, or whether he was just a "very canny businessman", replacing pieces that had been sold. "Probably both are true, but they are contradictory, which is interesting. [...]"

JonOne's Gallery | STREET ART - PAINTING | Looks -Pictures, Images, Visual Languages | Scoop.it

http://www.artcurial.com présente JonOne :

A Photographer’s Nod to Matisse

"For Daniel Gordon’s latest series “The Green Line”, the artist used photography and collage as tools to create works referenced from Matisse’s well-known 1905 portrait of his wife titled “The Green Stripe” (La Raie Verte).

Monica MIRZA's insight:

"“I’m interested in taking ideas that were radical in Matisse’s day (collapsing space through the blending of foreground and background, multiple angles viewed at the same time, and Fauvist color and expression, among others) and moving them into a contemporary photographic space,” Gordon wrote via email"
