The Balloonist: Trees of Life (1 of 2) | a lifetime online | Scoop.it

"…the so called quinarian approach to classification that was embodied in the work of British entomologist named William Sharpe Macleay (1792-1840) but taken up almost immediately by others, principally Nicholas Aylward Vigors (1787-1840) and William Swainson (1789-1855) during the 1820s and 30s. They somehow came to believe that living things existed in natural groups of five, that such groups of five are naturally divisible into five subgroups, each subgroup into five sub-subgroups, and so on. Affinities among taxa formed circular chains…Quinarians were also convinced that similarities between taxa based on affinity as well as analogy could be indicated in the same diagram…"

Everything is my fault | Derek Sivers | a lifetime online | Scoop.it

"I realized it was all my fault.

I let the culture of the company get corrupted.I ignored problems instead of nipping them in the bud.I was aloof and away instead of managing or training managers.I confused everyone by sharing my daily thoughts before they had cemented into decisions.I announced decisions, then assumed they were being done, without following-up to ensure.I whimsically delegated to the wrong people, avoiding the mental work of choosing wisely.(I could list another 20 of these, but you get the idea.)

It felt so SO good to realize it was my fault!"

Wired.co.uk investigates the attempts of the publishing industry to make the most of new technologies
Jerónimo M.M.'s insight:

"While Jekyll 2.0 might not transpire to be an appropriate project for a publishing house to replicate, its attempt to retell a narrative with a technical edge could well inspire future digital projects: a horror novel that changes pace according to data collected from a heart rate monitor, or cuts out a room's smart lights once a climactic passage is reached, escalating the horror further."

"There’s a huge underserved population today who are consuming content on their phones and we’re giving them a crappy experience. We’re telling them, “Here’s how the web works for you: You have to pinch and zoom your way through sites that were designed for a much larger monitor, you’re going to get errors and the fonts are going to be really tiny.”

A great piece on the importance of having content that is viewable or playable across all devices . Matmi CEO Jeff has been pushing the "content should belong to the user and not to the device " mantra for a while.

The Infamous Robert McKee: STORY Seminar in London - Sunni Brown | a lifetime online | Scoop.it

As I grow in my visual thinking work, it’s become abundantly clear that the story is 100 times more powerful than the visuals that support it (and am I going to get in trouble for saying that!) I’ve always known that visualizing crappy content is like putting lipstick on a pig, but the overwhelming importance of story, message, narrative, and arc is becoming part of my modus operandi like never before. So how does a girl get educated on story? Well, by taking the most famous seminar on story in the world – that of Robert McKee, story professor extraordinaire.

History Of The Color Wheel by COLOURlovers

History Of The Color Wheel by COLOURlovers | a lifetime online | Scoop.it

The first color wheel has been attributed to Sir Isaac Newton, who in 1706 arranged red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet into a natural progression on a rotating disk. As the disk spins, the colors blur together so rapidly that the human eye sees white. From there the organization of color has taken many forms, from tables and charts, to triangles and and wheels the history.

Interfaces táctiles en la música

Video New Sounds 2: Jeremy Ellis performs on Maschine Mikro by jerovital

Tips for Mastering E-mail Overload - HBS Working Knowledge

Unmindful use of email is probably the biggest source of infotention pollution. These tips were recommended by Media Lab director Joi Ito -- Howard

"What's the best way to train everyone around you to better e-mail habits? You guessed it: You go first. First, you say, "In order for me to make you more productive, I'm going to adopt this new policy to lighten your load…" Demonstrate a policy for a month, and if people like it, ask them to start doing it too.

Use a subject line to summarize, not describe.
People scan their inbox by subject. Make your subject rich enough that your readers can decide whether it's relevant. The best way to do this is to summarize your message in your subject."

Via Howard Rheingold

Krissie Vater Wilk's curator insight, July 31, 6:14 PM

E-mail habits start with you.  Try these new habits for a month and ask people if they noticed and if they like it.  Treat people how to e-mail you.

Reimagining the timeline: behind our Second Screen web app

Reimagining the timeline: behind our Second Screen web app | a lifetime online | Scoop.it

Cómo se hizo la webapp de las olimpiadas del Guardian uk

"Timelines remain one of the most useful visual mechanics to display sequenced information. They also, as we have been discovering, relate very closely to that other "visual mechanic" of our time - the stream, which, thanks to Facebook and Twitter, is emerging one of the pre-dominant, if not the dominant, metaphors for news distribution in the digital era.

So when the opportunity arose to create a "Second Screen" experience for the Olympics, which would have to display the huge variety of Olympics-related news: from blog posts, to tweets, pictures, and other data-based updates (results, medal tables, and the like), we wondered: was there a way to reimagine the timeline such that it enabled a better navigation of this voluminous stream?

Laura Lang Rethinks Magazines for Time Inc.’s Digital Audience

Laura Lang Rethinks Magazines for Time Inc.’s Digital Audience | a lifetime online | Scoop.it

Interesates conclusiones sobre el ciclo vital de consumo de noticias online -jero

"In her first couple months Laura Lang has convened senior executives to review each magazine and assess what each needs to thrive in a digital world.....  the focus seems to be on tailoring the company’s magazine properties around the digital consumer. Driving that plan is a trove of research that breaks down readers’ daily news cycle. The “Arc of the Day” study showed that in the morning readers want bite-size headlines and news flashes. In the afternoon, they are often at a desktop computer and want to grab a slide show or video, and at night they have time to engage in a deeper article. A related study also found that the average smartphone owner spends 1.4 hours a day waiting in line while browsing a device.

“There’s all this found time, and our strategy is to program to that,” said Fran Hauser, president of digital for the Time Inc. style, entertainment and lifestyle groups. People recently hired its own mobile editor dedicated to updating and formatting content on the magazine’s smartphone app, the first position of its kind in Time Inc."
