Inventing the Digital Medium: An Interview with Janet Murray (Part One)

Inventing the Digital Medium: An Interview with Janet Murray (Part One) | a lifetime online | Scoop.it

Janet Murray still going strong, and has new book out

"So the short answer to your question is, my core ideas from 1997 have proven quite useful despite the profound disruptions and exhilarating inventions of the past 15 years because my experience at MIT from the 1980s through 1990s anticipated a lot of the challenges that hit the wider society later. And the principles I'm always trying to teach my students and that I did my best to put down in Inventing the Medium (ITM) should last over the next several decades of change, because they are not about how to design for any particular platform, but about how to approach the digital design process itself so that decisions you make today will align with the trends of lasting innovation and solutions that you arrive at in the context of today's gizmos can teach you something and inform choices that you will make as a designer in the unknown future environment."

This is lovely, strange, and wrenching all at the same time. A teenager whose father passed away when he was just six had pulled out an old Xbox game that he and his dad used to play together, only to discover a part of his father lived on in the game, as a ghost car.

INTERNET: MÚSICA DEL SIGLO XXI Y BRECHA GENERACIONAL

INTERNET: MÚSICA DEL SIGLO XXI Y BRECHA GENERACIONAL | a lifetime online | Scoop.it

| a lifetime online | Scoop.it
YouTube made a big push to get video makers to deliver higher-quality clips. Now some say Google's site isn't delivering on its end.

http://www.vice.com/video

http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/12/ff_youtube/

Story 2.0: The Surprising Thing About The Next Wave Of Narrative

Story 2.0: The Surprising Thing About The Next Wave Of Narrative | a lifetime online | Scoop.it

Story resists reinvention. As the example of Finnegan’s Wake shows, storytelling is not something that can be endlessly rejiggered and reengineered. Story is like a circle. A circle is a circle. The minute you start fussing with the line you create a non-circle. Similarly, story only works inside narrow bounds of possibility. Imagine narrative transportation as this powerful brain capacity that is protected by a lock. The lock can only be opened with a specific combination. For as long as there have been humans, the ways of undoing the lock have been passed down through generations of storytellers. Going back to the earliest forms of oral folktales and moving forward through stage plays, to printed novels, and modern YouTube shorts, the fundamentals of successful storytelling have not changed at all. Over the last 15 years, perhaps the most spectacularly successful “new” thing in story has been very old. I’m speaking here of the rise of great cable dramas like The Sopranos, The Wire, and Breaking Bad. But there’s nothing new about these shows. They are just very good novels transferred to the screen. (The much ballyhooed anti-hero trend may be new to TV drama, but it’s nothing new to literature.) When it comes to the fundamentals of story, there is not now--and never will be--anything new under the sun.

Jerónimo M.M.'s insight:

J.Gottschall, autor de The Storytelling Animal.

The Perils of Perfection

The dominant ideology of Silicon Valley today is: what could be disrupted should be disrupted — even death.
Jerónimo M.M.'s insight:

Todo verdad

"After all, saving the world might be a price worth paying for destroying everyone’s privacy, while a larger-than-life mission might convince young and idealistic employees that they are not wasting their lives tricking gullible consumers to click on ads for pointless products. Silicon Valley and Wall Street are competing for the same talent pool, and by claiming to solve the world’s problems, technology companies can offer what Wall Street cannot: a sense of social mission."
