Remembering #NAWD: Out of 100+ only 1 Willamette #adjunct protested publicly

Remembering #NAWD: Out of 100+ only 1 Willamette #adjunct protested publicly | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

Adjuncts comprise 41% of Willamette’s faculty by Zane Sparling

Throwing rallies, teach-ins and sometimes marching out of the classroom, hundreds of part-time and temporary higher-education teachers participated in National Adjunct Walkout Day on February 25, 2015.

The event was observed at Willamette, too, but the celebration was a lonely one. Professor Scott Vandehey was the only adjunct at Willamette to participate in National Adjunct Walkout Day.

Ahh, the bigger issue behind this story is that Willamette U, the oldest colonizing college in the west, with $59,000 a year tuition and fees for little Johnny or Jane, well, one of my friends, who got that golden ticket in 1980, he was making $130,000 a year as full prof. The new profs coming in, at high mark, $115,000. Now, Vandehey, he is/was making $4100 a course. Let's see, $59,000 for an education, one year, which in this throw-away IT society is worthless -- unless those kids with the 7 figure income parents have the connections, which most do; and they pay adjuncts $4100 a class, in Salem, another depressed city brought to you by the Neoliberals. Here's a bigger injustice and ADMIN Class banality of evil -- the former president of the college with all the golden parachute perks bundled up was making, err, $890,000 a year.

#afterNAWD Campus Equity Week seeks solutions for #adjunct faculty #CEW2015 | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it
Campus Equity Week, Oct. 26-30, is all about educating students, parents and education advocates, who are shocked to discover that many part-time professors live below the poverty line due to wages that are a fraction of what full-time faculty earn. And it is about changing the paradigm of exploitation by circulating petitions and surveys, holding membership drives and crafting fair contracts that provide job security, higher wages and better working conditions so that adjuncts don't have to wait tables to make ends meet.

Where are our tears?

Where are our tears? | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

We have been reading much about the border crisis, and though this is an adjunct faculty page, as I always say, everything is related. We are all in this together.

So now we turn them away. They, who need our compassion and our care, who need to be taught, not to be sent back to a certain death. They need to be taught by the likes of us, mostly adjunct faculty. Because in the end, that is where they would most likely go, once they entered into community colleges, if they ever make it that far…

ON STRIKE - Nassau Community College Adjunct Faculty Association

ON STRIKE - Nassau Community College Adjunct Faculty Association | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

SHOW UNITY & STRENGTH

All AFA members are expected to picket from 3:30 PM - 7:30 PM every day beginning September 10.

The Adjunct Faculty Association (AFA), an independent union of adjuncts at Nassau Community College (NCC), represents 2600 adjunct faculty. Without the teaching skills of the adjunct faculty, NCC could not function. Responsible for teaching more than half the courses, the adjunct faculty is the backbone of the college.

Charles Loiacono writes:

The strike will continue until the agreement that we negotiated in good faith is recognized. All the maneuvers, threats, fuzzy math, and exaggerated claims have only prolonged the strike and moved us further apart.

On another front, I have gotten e-mails from unions around the country supporting the AFA and encouraging us to stand firm.

Adjunct professors: unsung heroes?

Adjunct professors: unsung heroes? | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it
Adjunct professors: unsung heroes? via Boise State University's The Arbiter Online. Not all university professors are created equal, at least not when it comes to job security. Adjunct professor Kathryn Baxter is dedicated to her students.... She works at least 40 hours a week.

When asked if she would like anything known about adjuncts, Baxter responded, “We don’t get offices. This is my office (pointing to tables in the library) and parking’s a bitch.”

VanessaVaile's insight:

Not paid for all hours worked either. Praise does not pay the bills. "Let us now praise unsung heroes" (instead of paying them) is a dangerous genre, even when, like Mallory Barker's piece here, sympathetic.

Like private-sector employers who turned to temporary workers during the recession, California State University relied on more part-time faculty than full-time professors last academic year as the 23-campus system looked to cut costs.

(first, don’t listen to almost Everyone) It’s going to be a staccato and fractured riff here, so apologies ahead of time. For those who can hang in there
VanessaVaile's insight:

Happy Birthday Paul from the rest of us. The riff actually does get around to teaching, tells us a lot more about post-boy investigative reporter, adjunct, social & eco warrior and instigator for change. How he got from there to here and how it informs his take on the interconnectedness of society, economy, environment and education. Inseparable issues. Condensed Bildungsroman of an activist

AFT Washington Affiliate Tries to Block Release of Public Documents Relating to Union Leader’s Embezzlement of Funds | Adjunct Advocate

AFT Washington Affiliate Tries to Block Release of Public Documents Relating to Union Leader’s Embezzlement of Funds | Adjunct Advocate | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

Ideally, union leaders help and protect members to the extent allowed by the contract negotiated between the union and the employer. At Green River Community College there have been allegations made that the game is being played differently. GRCC is located in Auburn, Washington, a suburb of Seattle with a population of about 75,000. In response to allegations made by part-time faculty who are union members represented by United Faculty (UF), AdjunctNation.com launched an investigation. As a part of our effort to gather documents, AdjunctNation filed two Freedom of Information Act requests on July 20, 2012. In response, UF’s leadership has attempted to force Green River Community College officials to keep from releasing emails and documents that could confirm leaders’ alleged efforts to single out, end the career and destroy the reputation of one of the union’s own members, part-time faculty member Keith Hoeller.
