Remind you of something? | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

Introducing the SignOn petition protesting Applebee's decision to cut worker hours in order to duck Obamacare, New Faculty Majority Coalition writes

Remind you of something? #CCAC, YoungstownU & Snakes in a Loophole. Sign the petition. Send a message. Share.

Tell Applebee's: Do NOT cut workers' hours to avoid ObamaCare

http://signon.org/sign/tell-papa-johns-apple?source=mo&id=58968-2964220-XfHLvsx

We'll be adding this to the Petition Junction page & reposting here at intervals, with updates on ongoing campaigns. That's the new petition system: 1st post or radical reminder/update will be a stand alone post. Reminders will cover multiple petitions. That way we can give them more equal attention and avoid cluttering the page.

You can introduce a petition by posting it yourself, like PSC/CUNY did, or even, within reason, give it a boost in the same way. Maybe someone will create and maintain an ad_con petition page.

Any questions?

America Magazine Union Organizing Efforts Advance for Catholic University Adjunct Faculty

America Magazine Union Organizing Efforts Advance for Catholic University Adjunct Faculty | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

One of the most interesting stories of the year in labor relations at Catholic institutions has been the movement of adjunct faculty to organize in unions....Duquesne, like Manhattan College in New York and St. Xavier University in Chicago....Meanwhile, a fourth Catholic university – one you have probably heard of! - is witnessing an adjunct faculty organizing effort. Georgetown University adjuncts have established an organizing committee. The instructors are seeking to join SEIU Local 500, which represents adjunct faculty at nearby George Washington University and American University.

From Master Plan to No Plan: The Slow Death of Public Higher Education | Dissent Magazine

From Master Plan to No Plan: The Slow Death of Public Higher Education | Dissent Magazine | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

The California student movement has a slogan that goes, “Behind every fee hike, a line of riot cops.” And no one embodies that connection more than the Ronald Reagan of the 1960s. Elected governor of California in 1966 after running a scorched-earth campaign against the University of California, Reagan vowed to “clean up that mess in Berkeley.”

It’s important to remember this chapter in California history because it may, in retrospect, have signaled the beginning of the end of public higher education in the United States as we’d known it.

From The New Faculty Majority blog:

Maria Maisto, president of New Faculty Majority, was the keynote speaker for events held on campus Oct.10 and 11 to observe Campus Equity Week. These events focus on the role of adjunct faculty at the CSU.

Dig those great buttons designed by Natalie Barnes: "Adjunct and proud" ~ "I learned from an Adjunct".~ "Adjunct Ally"

CEW (Campus Equity Week) EVERY YEAR is a damn good idea too. Can't wait for COCAL, CAW or whoever to pick up on it.

Smashing Apples: Shock Doctrine for Public Education – That’s What It’s All About | Raging Chicken Press

Smashing Apples: Shock Doctrine for Public Education – That’s What It’s All About | Raging Chicken Press | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

Editor's Note: This article inaugurates a new Raging Chicken Press series by the same name: Smashing Apples. This series will focus on the ongoing attacks against public education from kindergarten through higher education both in the Pennsylvania region and across the country.

....

Pennsylvania as Ground Zero in War Against Public Education?

You’d be right to suspect that I already have my answer to this question. I believe that Pennsylvania is a key front – if not the key front – in the battle over public education. I think Pennsylvania is ground zero because unlike cuts to education in other states, the Pennsylvania legislature under the leadership of Governor Grover Norquist…errr….I mean Governor Tom Corbett, has led a cradle to the grave gutting of public education.

....

APSCUF Contract: The Next Fight is Brewing

The Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF), represents the more than 6,000 faculty and coaches of the 14 universities that make up the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE)....And, right now, we are in the midst of what could prove to be a historic fight over the future of public education in the Commonwealth and, quite possibly, the nation. If Pennsylvania higher education faculty didn’t want to be on the front lines of a systematic attack against public education, they’re there now.

Evaluate the Evaluation: Course Evaluations and External Biases

Evaluate the Evaluation: Course Evaluations and External Biases | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

Course evaluations: everyone knows them and uses them, but does everyone know what are they good for? Opinions are very much split on how to evaluate the evaluation....Do course evaluations deliver the answers expected by teachers and administrators? Or do students respond based on assumptions outside the scope of the course?

Research done in several academic environments points out that the students’ answers cannot be taken as facts, but are raw data in need of interpretation and contextualization....Before judging teacher performance, tenure assessment committees should certainly evaluate the course evaluation.

WA community college violates Public Records Laws, retaliates against adjuncts filing requests

WA community college violates Public Records Laws, retaliates against adjuncts filing requests | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it
Keith Hoeller, GRAFA (Green River Adjunct Faculty
Association), Olympia WA, writes about violations of Public Records
Laws and retaliation for making public records requests,

"To whom it may concern, I have been told by several knowledgeable people that Green River Community College has not been complying with state and federal laws on the keeping and releasing of public records....Union leaders have been reluctant to produce emails under our state's public disclosure laws.

....

Indeed, two instances of retaliation have already happened. On July 30 I was harassed and threatened by a member of our faculty union's executive board. The board member approached me in a state of anger and fury because a reporter from  AdjunctNation had requested the emails of our union president....This same board member recently harassed and threatened another adjunct who had filed a public records request. And a second union board member, who has supervisory authority over the adjunct, did the same."

....

Exercpted from letter by Keith Hoeller to WA Senate Higher Education Committee and highered media. Why is this and other breaches of conduct (and WA state code) being ignored by the state, the college, the union, local and higher ed media?

Information wants to be free...

Hey, @sarahkendzior, I think you'll dig this: http://t.co/aI4YWc0X. #Georgetown's adjunct professors move to unionize with SEIU.

Adjunct professors move towards unionization with SEIU by Vanya Mehta on October 4, 2012 in The Georgetown Voice »  News.

In response to the growing presence of Service Employees International Union organizers on campus, Georgetown’s provost Robert Groves addressed an email to all faculty members reaffirming the University’s respect and support of the right of employees to unionize. The SEIU, which represents 2.1 million workers in the healthcare, property, and public services sectors, began work this semester to unionize adjunct professors on the Hilltop.
