The Predatory Pedagogy of On-Line Education  » CounterPunch: Tells the Facts, Names the Names

Quote -- Instructure, like their competitors, is very concerned about faculty resistance to their encroachments. They have all learned from past battles not to challenge faculty directly. Instead they are taking a soft approach.

University shouldn't submit to the power of Koch brothers, guest column by Christopher Bangert-Drowns

Implicit, but nonetheless fundamental, to the acceptance of resources from an institution or individual is the acceptance of the values of that institution or individual. In short, there is never an exchange of funds without an exchange of ideology.

This implicit exchange is sometimes made explicit, as was the case with Florida State University in 2011. According to the Center for Public Integrity, the Charles Koch Foundation promised to provide $1.5 million to Florida State’s economics department.

This donation, however, came with an egregious demand: The Koch Foundation claimed the right to select a committee that would retain full control over hiring decisions and annual evaluations. The economics department caved without much of a fight, setting a disturbing and dangerous precedent of corporate encroachment into academic freedom.

Writing About Academic Labour

This essay calls for a return to the labour theory of Marx, or rather to Marx’s negative critique of labour and its “pivotal” role in comprehending the political economy of higher education. It argues that a critique of capitalism and its apparent complexity must be undertaken through an immanent critique of labour, rather than from the standpoint of labour as has been the case in both Marxist and non-Marxist traditions of labour studies. Through a review of exemplar articles on ‘academic labour’, the essay draws attention to the fundamental importance of employing Marx’s method of abstraction so as to understand the concrete social world of capital. Finally, it proposes that the future of academic labour is to be found in its negation and overcoming rather than in efforts to resist the ‘logic’ of valorisation.

A Bad Week « @ReadyWriting @InsideHigher Ed (blog) | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

A Bad Week - Inside Higher Ed's College Ready Writing blog "about education, higher ed, teaching, and trying to re-imagine how we provide education."  Lee Skallerup writes:

❝Adjuncts have skills that are valuable. I have skills that are valuable and that are now valued within my position. Many adjuncts have long wanted to make a difference, but are trapped by their positions (or lack thereof) from being able to really do anything about it. So we find our own ways of making a difference. And those ways don’t often fit within the narrow confines of what we consider “good behavior of an academic,” be it taking to the Internet, taking a post-ac job, union organizing, or embracing an alt-ac label.

I have finally found a place, “in real life” and on social media. I won’t criticize those who have also found their way to make a difference. And for those who feel like we’re making a bigger difference than you, bringing us down won’t make you feel any more powerful, at least not in the long term.❞

Review of Mercedes K. Schneider's "Public Schools Under Attack" by Seth Sandronsky

Want names of and motives for public school reformers? Read A Chronicle of Echoes: Who’s Who in the Implosion of American Education by Mercedes K. Schneider (Information Age Publishing, Inc., 2014).

The author has skin in this game. She is a public school teacher against the corporate conquest of community-based public education. Schneider opens with a chapter on Joel Klein, former head of New York City’s Department of Education, now on the payroll of Rupert Murdoch, a billionaire media owner. In an era of growing income inequality, such corporatists and reformers are two sides of the same coin, according to Schneider.

Her evidence for this assertion is compelling. The implications are chilling.

#Adjunct faculty union begins negotiations with administration - The Globe

#Adjunct faculty union begins negotiations with administration - The Globe | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

On Nov. 7, official negotiations will begin between Point Park University administration and the newly unionized adjunct professors.  How long these negotiations will last depends mainly on how far apart the two groups’ positions turn out to be.

Rebecca Taksel, an adjunct professor in the School of Arts and Sciences and leader in the unionization effort, said in her West Penn classroom on Thursday that there is no way to know what all will be brought to the table until the negotiations are actually underway. However, topics of discussion will include compensation, job security and contracts, office space and benefits for the adjunct teachers.

She says that for her, the bottom line is simple: “Are we, the adjunct faculty, treated in such a way that we can do our job how we want to – to serve our students?” Taksel said.

The Crashed Hopes of Europe’s Refugees

The Crashed Hopes of Europe’s Refugees | A is for Adjunct | Scoop.it

Moral indignation is in the air, and rightly so. At a time of the greatest refugee crisis since the Second World War, when more migrants have died crossing the Mediterranean than any other time in history, the British government revoked funding for EU coastal ‘rescue’ services.Their reasoning – brutal in its intentionality – is that it encourages migrants to gamble their fates on the crossing. The UK government has decided that the greatest deterrent to migration is death itself.Lampedusa looms large over the hopes and prospects of the underdeveloped world. The dreams of a better life shall be crashed by the waves of the Med.

While this should morally outrage us, the situation is far more complex than it would first appear.

Have you heard? Adjunct faculty at Tompkins Cortland Community College have begun organizing a union -- the TC3 Adjunct Association!

Our overarching goal is to build a strong and democratic organization and negotiate a fair contract. This will ultimately help to decrease the high adjunct turnover that exists at TC3 and enhance the college’s ability to both attract and retain the most dedicated and qualified adjunct workforce possible — things that can only help to improve TC3’s ability to offer the best educational experience we can for our students....
