Johnny Cash Has Been Everywhere (Man)!

Johnny Cash Has Been Everywhere (Man)! | A Geography Scrapbook | Scoop.it

This is more for the teachers than the students since this is most certainly not a current pop culture reference.  Still, what's better than an interactive map displaying the locations where Johnny Cash has been while listening to him sing "I've Been Everywhere?"  (Tech support: Use Google Chrome or Safari to play and ignore the finger).

NAACP History: Rosa Parks

NAACP History: Rosa Parks | A Geography Scrapbook | Scoop.it

"I write in the spirit of remembering Rosa Parks profound act of self, and justice, on a fateful day, many years ago. Her 1957 action -- an intensely spatial action -- profoundly changed the way in which African Americans thought of themselves, and the way in which white-supremacist dominated America were positioned politically, through the act of refusing to sit in the back of a Montgomery, Alabama bus, on December 1. This act overturned the spatiality of injustice African American citizens faced each day, at every turn.

As Geographers, I believe it is particularly pertinent to reflect on this powerful act of the self.

Thank you, Rosa Parks, for changing not only history, but ourselves."

Defining the modern-day San Francisco hipster – California Beat | A Geography Scrapbook | Scoop.it

If you’re from Seattle, Portland, New York, Boston, or San Francisco, odds run high that you’ve heard the term ‘hipster’ used in street vernacular.

You cannot go a single day watching TV or walking through our nation’s big cities without seeing a hipster — or a hipster imitation — around town.

Strange, Beautiful and Unexpected: Planned Cities Seen From Space | Wired Science | Wired.com | A Geography Scrapbook | Scoop.it
Most planned cities probably aren't built with the view from space in mind, but some of them create incredible patterns on the landscape that can only be truly appreciated from above. Planned cities are laid out all at once and built from scratch.
