A New Fantastic Bloom's Taxonomy Wheel for iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

A New Fantastic Bloom's Taxonomy Wheel for iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | A Educação Hipermidia | Scoop.it

"Today while I was browsing through my Twitter feeds I came across this fabulous Bloom's Taxonomy wheel of apps shared by Anthony. If you still recall, some previous versions of this wheel have already been featured here in Bloom's Taxonomy for Teachers section .

As you can see, the wheel outlines a wide variety of verbs and activities related to each thinking level of Blooms taxonomy coupled with iPad apps that go with it. These apps are supposed to help teachers and students better cultivate these different thinking levels in their use of iPad apps. And because the the visual is not hyperlinked, I went ahead and provided the links for each of these apps in the lists below. Enjoy"

Great article - the answer is simple; the politics impossible. A post-growth society will need a new prosperity paradigm, new institutions and new leaders. Think this will happen without collapse and hard shocks? think again.

Eli Levine's curator insight, March 22, 8:02 PM

The elephant in the room.

What is the point of economic growth if it does not enrich all of our lives?  What good is it if we impoverish ourselves and our environment in order to get it?

We're not all going to be millionaires, nor does one/their family need to be millionaires in order to be happy, well off and able to take care of themselves.  What is the point of prioritizing pieces of cloth rag over our physical, psychological, social and environmental health?  Why not let growth happen organically, based upon the natural ebbings and flowing of goods and services, technological development and resource conservation?

What good is money if you poison yourself for it?

Think about it.

Kurt Vonnegut's rejected anthropology thesis proposed that the shapes of a culture's stories was at least as important as the shapes of their pots and spearheads.

I've been interested about the potential relationship of literary form to visual form, how we understand them logically, intellectually and emotively. How could a drawing, painting or work of architecture express the ideas contained in a work of literature through the use of form?

You can see Vonnegut discuss his ideas on the shapes of stories in this clip on YouTube:

Teaching in the New (Abundant) Economy of Information

Teaching in the New (Abundant) Economy of Information | A Educação Hipermidia | Scoop.it

n the past, teachers gave life to learning for generations of students — no different than today. But they were operating in an environment of scarcity that would make today’s teachers cringe (and they do, every time the Internet is down for more than just

You Are No Longer Allowed To Present | A Educação Hipermidia | Scoop.it

Here are some reasons why your presentations are BAD!   We know that so many of you use programs like PowerPoint or Prezi because they have been around for a while, and it is what you know, but change is not always a bad thing, especially if that change can lead to presentations beyond your wildest imagination.

Via Baiba Svenca

Gavin Meikle's curator insight, March 10, 6:02 AM

A (mostly) great post with some sound advice for better presentations.  Here's my take on it .....

Design

At the risk of upsetting all those wonderful Graphic Designers out there, I would recommend going easy on the fancy designs.   They are not essential.  What is essential  is a clear simple strategy with one idea per slide, minimal text, no bullet points (yes I mean it!) and clear simple pictures, graphs and diagrams to illustrate your verbal messages.

Content
Developing compelling content is important but try to avoid using a script when you deliver.    reading scripts leads to flat, lifeless delivery and makes it much harder to respond, "on the fly2 to your audience.  Instead use  a few cue cards with key points only or a simple mind map.  Either will keep you on track without restricting your ability to improvise in response to audience reaction.

Story Telling
To true. Stories are much more engaging that lists of facts or endless graphs.  Stories also create emotional engagement which is needed if you want the audience to be motivated to do something after the presentation.

Humour
Yes it is powerful but it is risky too.   Telling jokes rarely works and can lead to all sorts of problems (poor timing, inappropriate content etc.)  Instead use gentle self deprecating humour.  Be willing to poke a little fun at yourself and the audience will warm to you.

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, March 10, 10:43 AM

My take on good presentations:  1) Story 2) Content: Restrain your left brain 3) Design: the experience 4) Humor (optional).  Presenting starts with story and uses the visual design to reinforce and add new dimensions to your message. Design the experience, not the slides. Humor works if it's actually funny--not contrived. I've seen a lot that doesn't. Humor is optional.  If it comes naturally, great.  Focusing on story and image is mandatory.  Use serious restraint with putting words on your slides.  Words are processed by the rational, 'left-brain' which takes your audience out of any emotional experience and into thinking and linear processing.  Take them on a journey, don't give them a lecture.  If you feel compelled to give your audience words, give them a handout when you're done.

rwestby's curator insight, March 10, 11:36 AM

PowToon, a Chrome Web App (in Beta) is a great presentation tool that can animate and jazz up even the most gray of presentations. Upgrades are available for those who like  a bit extra.

European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning: Predicting Student Dropouts with Data Mining Methods

European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning: Predicting Student Dropouts with Data Mining Methods | A Educação Hipermidia | Scoop.it

Abstract

This study examined the prediction of dropouts through data mining approaches in an online program. The subject of the study was selected from a total of 189 students who registered to the online Information Technologies Certificate Program in 2007-2009. The data was collected through online questionnaires (Demographic Survey, Online Technologies Self-Efficacy Scale, Readiness for Online Learning Questionnaire, Locus of Control Scale, and Prior Knowledge Questionnaire). The collected data included 10 variables, which were gender, age, educational level, previous online experience, occupation, self efficacy, readiness, prior knowledge, locus of control, and the dropout status as the class label (dropout/not). In order to classify dropout students, four data mining approaches were applied based on k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN), Decision Tree (DT), Naive Bayes (NB) and Neural Network (NN). These methods were trained and tested using 10-fold cross validation. The detection sensitivities of 3-NN, DT, NN and NB classifiers were 87%, 79.7%, 76.8% and 73.9% respectively. Also, using Genetic Algorithm (GA) based feature selection method, online technologies self-efficacy, online learning readiness, and previous online experience were found as the most important factors in predicting the dropouts.

Keywords: Educational data mining, student dropout prediction, k-nearest neighbour, decision tree, Naive Bayes, neural network.
