Throughout its history, American advertising has used language and imagery depicting various ethnic and racial groups. A great many of these representations of non-White people would today be labeled as racist and stereotypical. Although contemporary advertising generally strives to be sensitive to multicultural issues, there remain many places in advertising and marketing where greater efforts are possible. This unit focuses specifically on Native American (including Alaskan and Hawaiian) ethnic imagery in advertising. It examines both older representations and some more contemporary ones. It seeks not only to survey the story of Native Americans and advertising but also to serve as a model for similar investigations of the relationship between other ethnic/racial groups and advertising....

'Mad Men' And The Boston Marathon Bombing - 05/07/2013 By Gary Holmes "Watching “Man Men,” always a disquieting experience, was more unsettling than usual on April 28, coming so soon after the Boston Marathon bombing. The episode in question (“The Flood”) revolved around the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr., and was a case study in how people react to national tragedies. As occurred with many real-life ad executives at the time, Don Draper and his fictional colleagues learned about the King assassination at the New York Advertising Club annual ANDY Awards dinner. The organizers apparently became aware of the shooting at some point during the festivities and their hopes to delay the announcement until the end of the evening were thwarted when someone shouted out the news during a speech by Paul Newman (see http://bit.ly/10OptjG for The New York Times write-up the next day). The rest of the episode dealt with the assassination’s aftershocks as the characters tried to find meaning in this tragedy...."

"Kim Komando has been teaching people to use computers (sorry, komputers) for decades -- she runs a komputer-themed radio call-in show, running for three hours each weekend. But if we set our time machine to 1993, Komando released a series of "Komputer Tutor" VHS tapes, including one called Komputer Kindergarten that taught basic computer skills (DOS and Windows, and "what is a printer") to beginners. The good folks over at Everything is Terrible edited Komputer Kindergarten down into a highlight reel, just under three minutes. It's amazing. Seriously..."

Moms Stressed Out by Pinterest - 05/13/2013 While Pinterest might seem like a place for caring and sharing, the female-dominated social network is actually stressing a lot of users out, according to a Today.com survey of 7,000 U.S. mothers: in fact, 42% of respondents said they suffer from “Pinterest stress,” stemming from anxiety that they can’t live up to the ideal suggested by images of domestic perfection posted on the site.... "Of course, this phenomenon -- in which people carefully craft their online images to show themselves in the best possible light, and other people mistakenly assume this somehow corresponds to reality -- isn’t limited to Pinterest..."

Don and co. won a big account in episode 6 — Chevy. Here's a look at what the ad campaign for the mysterious "XP-887" car actually looked like. "..The car sold well at first (so this ad campaign must have helped), however, over time the Vegas developed huge problems. So much so that the Vega has been called "the worst car ever made in America," while Popular Mechanics once referred to it as the car that "nearly destroyed GM.""
