MildGreen Initiative's insight:
It might look like a handbag dog, but this is actually the descendant of a widely traveled worker, companion and pest eradication officer upon the french merchantmen. A brawny Sailor's Dog, The Bijon Friese.

We have trained about 30 of these fun loving  miniature poodles.
Raised litters (of 5) and hosted many of them in our home.

Understanding the relationship between dog ownership and children's physical activity and sedentary behaviour

Understanding the relationship between dog ownership and children's physical activity and sedentary behaviour | A Community of Dog | Scoop.it

Dog ownership is a catalyst for physical activity in adults. Given 50–70% of Australian households with children have a dog, dog-facilitated physical activity may be an effective way to increase physical activity and decrease child obesity.

Objective

We hypothesized that children with a family dog walk more, are more physically active and are more likely to achieve recommended levels of weekly physical activity compared with children who do not have a dog.

Method

Cross-sectional data from the Western Australian TRravel, Environment, and Kids project (TREK) were analyzed for 1218 children aged 10–12 years. Individual and environment factors, child physical activity, walking, screen use, sedentary behaviour and dog ownership status was collected from child and parent questionnaires. Children's height and weight were measured.

Results

Approximately 60% of children had a family dog. Dog ownership was associated with, on average, 29 more minutes of walking and 142 more minutes of physical activity per week (P ≤ 0.01). After adjustment, children with a dog were 49% more likely to achieve the recommended level of weekly physical activity (420 min) and 32% more likely to have walked in their neighbourhood in the last week, compared with non-dog owners (P ≤ 0.05). These relationships varied by gender. Dog ownership was not associated with screen use or weight status.

Conclusions

Dog ownership was associated with walking and physical activity, but not screen use or weight status. Within dog-owning families, the promotion of walking and active play with a dog may be a strategy to increase children's physical activity.

Bad "Dog Whisperer"?

World-renowned dog trainer Cesar Millan is taking some serious heat for methods used on his hit show "Dog Whisperer." The American Humane Association…
MildGreen Initiative's insight:

rider to remind viewers: "There are many methods of dog training and owners should work with professionals to choose the right approach for them."

And not before time. !

Despite earning about $175,000US/week. Cesar's methodology may get results that owners themselves laud, it is what ends up on the cutting room floor that evidences there is still room for a real professional in the training of your dog.

A "force free' trainer will not need to  resort to "numerous inhumane training techniques"   such as partially asphyxiating neck pinning.

Just yesterday, Cesar was publically walking 'his pack' an unleashed (and reportedly troubled) Great Dane under Cesar's charge, sent a human to hospital with a bite injury to the hand.

Such things become predictable... its a matter of concern to many. I know folk who travel over the world just to learn his techniques (to bring them back here) .

Pet Puja: Learned helplessness - Bangalore Mirror

Pet Puja: Learned helplessness - Bangalore Mirror | A Community of Dog | Scoop.it
In the list of abnormal behaviours of animals, one of the problem behaviours often identified in home dogs is learned helplessness.
MildGreen Initiative's insight:

The expression 'learned' mischaracterizes the issue and places the responsibility for the behaviour onto the dog... 'Taught' helplessness helps us address the underlying issue and aide's remedial actions.

I have seen agility and obedience dogs that perform to a high standard express unwanted attention seeking (biting at ankles, trousers, barking etc.) best described as taught helplessness.  The dog hasn't figured out what it needs to do...attention seeking is misread as eagerness to please, and excused as 'motivated'.

Worse, it is reinforced.....

Excellent discussion piece, though.... enjoy. And think 'what would/could you do to change the outcomes.... preventably and remedially?  / Blair

How to turn a dog walk into an urban agility challenge

Let's just admit it: even for those of us with the best of intentions for our pets, taking the dog out for a walk can sometimes feel like a chore.

Via Rudy Montigny, Marcos Mendoza Adiestramiento Canino
MildGreen Initiative's insight:

The utilisation of the urban space is exactly where you should take your dog for training.... but, logically, where you have already created some measure of reliable conformance, in a safe environment. Remember if you cant get your dog to do this in an undistracted environment, don't have high expectations of getting conformance in the public domain. You are teaching your dog to fail attempting to cue behaviours where there is something else better to do.... And there is always that external, unpredictable 'thing/action/event' you will need to work around. I recall my last dog who was pretty much bulletproof and would run alongside my bicycle all over the city, even amongst dense traffic, under voice control. He would easily run 10-15km, sometimes as much as 25km return across the fabric of the city... ignoring cats, other dogs, ducks etc. Until one day, crossing an open park and he encountered for the first time a green plastic public rubbish bin cast in the shape of a rampant dog.... "Spooked!"  Arrff Arrff!  Major distraction. Such things we see as normal are not so to a dog. But that said.... his urban agility, under command (and a duty of care) was legendary.  It contributed to 'his character' in so many ways. When on tramps and other outdoor pursuits you could see a clear problem solving ability... even crossing wire mesh swing bridges over raging rivers, climbing along mountain ridges, sea kayaking, and 'tracking' his way back to the car (or wherever) as if, without him we would be lost forever. (more of his story is at http://doglinks.co.nz/holmes/holmespage.htm )

Urban Dog is where it is at... Dog trails are better than dog parks for creating the companion animal we all desire.

Enjoy....
