Agriculture needs to take center stage when all national governments discuss climate change. The ever-increasing demand for food cannot be met by a shrinking capacity to produce food. The poorest people have the least amount of responsibility for climate change, yet already suffer the most from it. Negotiators need to devote their attention to the inextricable link between climate change and agriculture – not the opposite, which is what we are seeing now as climate negotiators focus narrowly on national interests and domestic politics.”

Excellent article for those of us just starting a garden.  Among the benefits of a small home permaculture garden are:

provides food safety; attracts wildlife; creates biodiversity; reduces your carbon footprint; saves money; preservers heirloom species; adds variety to your diet; gives fresh, uncontaminated food.  Plus, gardening gets you outdoors and provides stress relief.  Aloha, Russ.

Africa was the only region where the number of hungry grew over the period, from 175 million to 239 million, with nearly 20 million added in the past four years. The prevalence of hunger, although reduced over the entire period, has risen slightly over the past three years, from 22.6 percent to 22.9 percent - with nearly one in four hungry. And in sub-Saharan Africa, the modest progress achieved in recent years up to 2007 was reversed, with hunger rising 2 percent per year since then.

Knowledge is increasingly online and digital, making connectivity essential; and offline explicit knowledge invisible. Getting their own hidden knowledge online and visible is a number one task for institutional KRCs. It also makes sure that knowledge seekers are more likely to find more of what they want. Extension, educational and practical (non-scientific) information as well as content in smaller languages is especially missing. Physical ‘reading’ and ‘storage’ spaces are becoming redundant in many institutions; these spaces can be re-purposed to support other forms of communication and interaction. Peter Balyntine - ILRI

David Nabarro, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on Food Security and Nutrition who directed the development and implementation of the study, states that 

“As people’s incomes increase, their demand for (and access to) livestock products tends to increase as well.” He believes that “the degree to which people have predictable access to safe livestock products depends on the extent to which local markets responds to increasing demand and to which gaps in production can be met through imports from elsewhere”.

Dr. Bukar Usman (D.V.M., M.V.S.c)'s insight:

“The results of this research set the scene for more intensive work on options for expanding livestock production in Africa”,said David Nabarro. Follow-up work will explore how the dynamics of livestock markets will evolve in Africa and how changes in habitats will impact on the likelihood that new diseases will emerge and threaten the health of both animal and, if they are transmissible, human populations providing a detailed map for disease emergence hotspots under the different livestock scenarios.

"We were curious: if we used mobile technology, could we get information faster, cheaper, and in a lighter way?" says Arif Husain, chief economist at the WFP, from the group's no frills offices in a warehouse district outside of Rome. "Meaning that if you use SMS or voice calling, you don't have 10 page questionnaires. You can throw out some simple questions, over time, and see the responses you get."

Based on the review then, you can safely claim these things about grass-fed beef and milk:

• Steak and ground beef from grass-fed cattle can be labeled “lean” or “extra lean.”

• Some steak from grass-fed cattle can be labeled “lower in total fat” than steak from conventionally raised cattle.

• Steak from grass-fed cattle can carry the health claim that foods low in total fat may reduce the risk of cancer.

• Steak and ground beef from grass-fed cattle can carry the “qualified” health claim that foods containing the omega-3 fatty acids EPA or DHA may reduce the risk of heart disease.

The last decade of CAADP implementation, has redefined and reshaped the critical path to the attainment of Africa`s agricultural transformation objectives. Mrs. Tumusiime informed the Forum that the recent AU Joint Conference of Ministers of Agriculture, Rural Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 1st to 2nd May 2014 adopted a Resolution endorsing seven Africa Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation Goals (3AGTGs) for 2025 for consideration by the AU Heads of State and Government, at their Malabo Summit.

Akinwunmi Adeshina, Nigeria’s minister of agriculture, said, “In 2014, 38mn metric tonnes of cassava was produced in Nigeria. Our target for 2017 is to reduce the cost of production and this varies with locations within Nigeria. We want to reduce cost by giving out improved varieties to farmers, which we have been doing in the last three years.”

The disease is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium knowlesi, transmitted by mosquitoes which usually feed on monkeys’ blood.

Reducing global poverty and hunger and improving nutrition are core objectives of Feed the Future, the U.S. Government’s global hunger and food security initiative. Harnessing agricultural science and technology is critical to meeting the challenge of increasing production of more nutritious food with fewer natural resources, while adapting to climate change. The Feed the Future Research Strategy supports targeted research on sustainable intensification of plant and animal production systems and on increasing the availability of and access to nutritious foods. Livestock – including goats, sheep, cattle, pigs, poultry and fish – are central to this effort and contribute to smallholder incomes and household nutrition.

No matter how dire the facts, people still don’t seem to care enough about climate change to drive political action. If we want to make them care, we need to connect climate change to human impacts. Here’s a human impact: Climate change threatens food production. So we’ll get people to care by explaining that climate change may mean a future in which we won’t be able to produce enough food.

Global malnutrition could fall 84 percent by the year 2050 as incomes in developing countries grow - but only if agricultural productivity continues to improve and climate change does not severely damage agriculture, Purdue University researchers say.

"Up to 2050, there could be some pluses for agriculture," he said. "But in the longer run, adverse temperatures will likely become overwhelming, and rising carbon dioxide concentrations won't help after a certain point. Eventually, you drop off a cliff."
