Makeup Makes Women Appear More Competent: Study

Makeup Makes Women Appear More Competent: Study | A Beauty Supreme | Scoop.it

A little makeup may help your colleagues see you as trustworthy. But that viewpoint can diminish if you wear too much.

I especially like the part where they discuss how women should have different makeup "attire" like you would clothing, depending on the agenda! That is so important.  I can't tell you how many times I have preached that women need more than one look.  However, you can go overboard.  Apparently putting your best face forward gets you places but looking like a drag queen will backfire! LOVE this article.

More Shocking Tales Of Fashion Industry Racism

More Shocking Tales Of Fashion Industry Racism | A Beauty Supreme | Scoop.it
Model Chanel Iman recently spoke out about dealing with racism in the fashion industry and now Jordan Dunn is following suit.
Monifa Mortis's insight:

This is really disheartening...that in 2013 we still have such a segregated fashion & beauty industry. The most powerful celebrities in the world are brown skinned women.  Oprah, Michelle Obama, Beyonce, Rhianna, Naomi and they still are not relevant enough to get appropriately trained Makeup Artists?

Allow me to qualify; just because you are ethnic does not mean you can do ethnic skin.  I can say from my own experience that a lot of brown skinned Makeup Artists can't do brown skinned subjects.  However, there is still a lack of diversity in the backstages of Fashion Week and in the beauty industry overall.

How can properly trained, ethnic Makeup Artists, give the service that models like Jourdan Dunn need if they only allow Pat McGrath inside?  Furthermore, if there are only two black Models in all of Fashion Week, why would there even be a need for ethnic, ethnic-trained Makeup Artists?

Here is the insult to the injury...out of all those famous black celebrites that I named above - only one is presently using a brown skinned Makeup Artist and it's not Michelle Obama. Scandalous!

Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Monifa Mortis's insight:

As a professional makeup artist, I have off days just like everyone.  I don't know if there was a pro behind these pictures of makeup disasters.  Sometimes it is just amatuers cutting back on expenses and doing there own face.  But, if there was money in the budget and any of these pictures were the work of a professional makeup artist, I would really be devestated and embarassed for them.  *SMH*

Cate Blanchett Goes Un-Photoshopped for Mag Cover | Story | Wonderwall

Cate Blanchett Goes Un-Photoshopped for Mag Cover | Story | Wonderwall | A Beauty Supreme | Scoop.it

This is interesting: An unretouched cover photo of a FEMALE movie star and the world goes bananas. What about when male stars are constantly photographed unretouched? When George Clooney or Brad Pitt show their wrinkles - what...no parade about them becoming real? This is such a sexist double-standard. The bottom line is we all know magazine covers are fake and movies are fake, hell, even acting is fake. So I ask, is this really about what is real or fake? Or is this about what people want to believe? I think it's about what people want to believe and they always want to believe the fantasy because that is what is entertaining and hopeful. Fantasy is what captures the imagination and gives us escape from the flaws we all have and see in the reality of our everyday life. If we wanted reality, we wouldn't pay 6.95 for a magazine or 9.50 for a movie ticket, when we can get it for free outside our front door. Reality isn't always as beautiful and the people want what is beautiful. I like the cover, and I love Cate Blanchett, but I wouldn't mind the unretouched photo if the makeup was on point (LOL). See what I mean, it's all about a beautiful image whether it comes from lighting, retouching or makeup, it's got to be inspiring. I would feel more inspired if she had on a good set of eyelashes and a stronger hair style! Who cares about wrinkles...it's how you rock them and she is rocking them with this jacket - but her face needed some pop and her hair needed some juejing. Let's keep it real (pun intended), Perfect skin does not make a woman beautiful. Cate is beautiful because she has a special symmetry and shape to her face: cheek bones, eyes, nose, lips. Ice blue eyes and a soft pale complexion and hair is what gives so much impact to her look. Would it be a deceitful beauty if she were to wear a full coverage foundation in this picture (LOL). I mean, can't we be real and stunning at the same time? Maybe not......not so much......hmmm.

Donna Karan’s Haiti-Inspired Ads Deemed Controversial, ‘Insensitive’

Donna Karan’s Haiti-Inspired Ads Deemed Controversial, ‘Insensitive’ | A Beauty Supreme | Scoop.it

The designer has been criticized for using... I am very torn - Donna Karan is a designer (an artist) who is inspired by the beauty and the struggle of Haitians (according to this article), but that is not the story that is being told in this ad. However, how different is this from Beyonce using poor African dancers in her video "Girls, who run the world". Is it because Beyonce is black and Donna Karan is not?

European Union's Ban on Animal Testing for Cosmetics to Begin in March - TIME

European Union's Ban on Animal Testing for Cosmetics to Begin in March - TIME | A Beauty Supreme | Scoop.it
European Union's Ban on Animal Testing for Cosmetics to Begin in March
TIME
It's been a long and rather divisive journey, but at last, the European Union will prohibit the import and sale of animal tested cosmetics, effective March 11.
Monifa Mortis's insight:

There are just some things that America is really slow to embrace and damn near in the Dark Ages about - Animal Testing is one of them.  I love how the EU is leading in the area of banning animal testing on products.  I hope the U.S. will follow shortly.

The way Fashion die-hards are called "Fashionistas", I called Beauty die-hards "Beauty Bunnies" - in honor of women and men who really live for anything about the pursuit of beauty.  Truthfully, bunnies and other animals are abused and harmed in the pursuit of beauty product development so I am going to stop using that term.  "Beautynista" is the new term du jour.

Haute Off the Press: A Shocking Example of the Power of Makeup

Haute Off the Press: A Shocking Example of the Power of Makeup | A Beauty Supreme | Scoop.it

Munner83's ulzzang photo has gone viral, stirring up a beauty controversy.

There was appaently a negative response to this makover. So, how is it that plastic surgery is becoming more socially acceptable and yet we still complain that makeup is "fake".  I don' t think that makeup's "fakeness" is the problem.  But just like with anything in life, it has to be done well and appropriate for the person and the occassion.  I think this makover is FABULOUS.

Humans respond to beautiful, lovely and pleasant things.  If we didn't, nobody would bother to style their hair, brush their teeth and wear matching clothes in order not to offend.

If it doesn't harm you or anyone else, why can't we incorporate some fake-for-glam-sake. If you don't have to go under the knife or risk severe injury what's wrong with a little help?

How is gluing your eyelids to create a crease, different from wearing Spanx, a girdle or a wonder bra? How is it different from gluing in weave tracks or gluing on fake eyelashes?  Don't we dye our hair, perm our hair and contour our noses?

I am in favor of safe enhancements and augmentaion but not proceedures that require more drastic and permanent changes. For me, I feel most comfortable when I can take all that crap off at the end of the day.  Personlly, I am not interested in anything that requires "recovery time" or runs the risk of infection, blindness, hair loss or cancer.  The closest I've ever been to plastic surgery is one visit to a tanning bed when I was in college *cringe*.

I feel that if you are willing to risk your life and health, maybe you need to work more on loving and accepting your issues. I have come to better accept my pale skin because no amount or type of beautification is worth my life. Alive and attractive, cute. Dead and freakishly gorgeous, not cute.

Sound off:  When is it "fake" and when is it just "pulling myself together girl"?
