Postmastectomy pain most troubling problem for breast cancer survivors

Postmastectomy pain most troubling problem for breast cancer survivors | 7th Level Wellbeing | Scoop.it

"Nov. 6, 2013 — More than 40 percent of 200,000 U.S. women diagnosed with breast cancer every year undergo surgery. Though treatment advances have significantly reduced mortality from breast cancer, a study published in The Journal of Pain reported that persistent postmastectomy pain is rated by survivors as their most troubling symptom. The Journal of Pain is published by the American Pain Society, www.americanpainsociety.org.

Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh evaluated 611 women who had undergone total or partial mastectomy and were treated with chemotherapy, radiation and/or hormone therapy. Their objective was to determine which factors -- demographics, tumor size, pain severity, treatments, stress, and psychological factors -- contribute to postmastectomy pain.

It's interesting to note the psychosocial variables of "anxiety, depression, impaired sleep, somatization and catastrophizing"  as contributing factors to postmastectomy pain .

People with “purpose” spend less time in the hospital

People with “purpose” spend less time in the hospital | 7th Level Wellbeing | Scoop.it
People who feel their lives have purpose do what they can to prolong them.
Tambre Leighn's insight:

Having a mission and a purpose in life and working with a wellbeing coach to align those with preventative care leads to healthy behavior changes. If people could "just do it," they would. But when they are stressed and overwhelmed, positive thinking or trying to push themselves into making better lifestyle choices simply won't work.

Independence and making it on our own is an overrated concept. The reality is, successful people work with a team in one way or another. You can try to do it alone, but why would you if you can create the results you want by building a support team to help you generate the life of wellbeing you deserve?

Should radiologists discuss results with patients?

Should radiologists discuss results with patients? | 7th Level Wellbeing | Scoop.it
A lack of clinical context might cause a radiologist to misinform the patient.
Tambre Leighn's insight:

Yes...but a lack of compassion can be just as traumatic. Job titles and specialities do not guarantee patients and their families are being appropriately supported through the delivery of results. A highly experienced specialist failed miserably in how he handled my late husband's diagnosis including advising me to withhold information from him. Epic fail. I'm sure many radiologists and other healthcare professionals could have done a much better job of it.

The sham drug idea of the year: 'pink Viagra'

Many women report losing their desire for sex, some temporarily, some permanently. Is this a relationship problem, a normal aspect of life changes or, as the pharmaceutical industry maintains, an “unmet medical need”? That was the question under consideration for two days of meetings in late October, during which the Food and Drug Administration heard from sexual medicine experts and women with sexual complaints.

This is exactly what creates mistrust with consumers when it comes to pharma.
