Posting Your Religion Online Could Cost You That Job.

Posting Your Religion Online Could Cost You That Job. | 727 Industries | Scoop.it

Job candidates who share their religious affiliations on Facebook and Twitter could have a more difficult time finding work, new research suggests.

A study from Carnegie Mellon University revealed that while there are a number of personal questions employers are not legally allowed to ask during the interview, job candidates who post those details on social networks are opening themselves up to potential hiring discrimination.

"Our experiment focused on a novel tension: the tension between the law — which, in the United States, protects various types of information, making it risky for certain personal questions to be asked during interviews — and new information technologies, such as online social networks, which make that same information often available to strangers, including interviewers and employers," said Alessandro Acquisti, associate professor of information technology and public policy and one of the study's authors.

Religion around the world is diversifying. Religion is a large part of a person's morals and how they act. People have to be more and more carful about what they say because almost everything can be tracked due to the advancing 21st century technology tools. It is important to not exclude and discriminate anyone, but even if something slightly offensive is posted online, it can be traced back to the source, and people can loose thier jobs. This is related to key issue one because it talks about the  universalizing religions and how they can effect countries like the US.

This article states that posting your religion and religious affiliations may cause some people to not hire you for specific jobs. As it says, this is an issue concerning "potential hiring discrimination" where employers refuse to hire people with religious preferences that they may disagree with. I personally have no religious affiliation but I believe it's unjust for an employer to not hire someone based off their religious preferences rather than their work ethic and qualifications. Although, this kind of discrimination is clearly evident in many aspects of the world especially with the growth of many major religions.

I think that this is messed up because people should not be judged on what they believe in but rather if they actually do work.

Should Jesus be portrayed as a white man despite hailing from the Middle East? Should Santa always be depicted as white, despite being a fictional character based on a fourth century Greek Christian bishop?

Politicians are in touch with public opinion after all: even they think that the public should have the right to sack useless and corrupt MPs. Their leaders, terrified about the implications of undermining their grip over MPs, do not.
