Excerpted from Thunder and Lightning: Cracking Open the Writer's Craft. Published by arragement with Open Road Media.

"I HAVE NOT SEEN WRITING lead to happiness in my friends' lives. I'm sorry to say this, I, who just fifteen years ago published a book telling everyone to grab their notebooks and write their asses off. No high like it, I said. I meant it — and it was true. Now I'm past fifty, and I have given everything to writing, the way a Zen master watches her breath and burns through distraction. Was I a fool to do this? Did I choose the wrong path?"

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

As a student I wrote a lot of poetry.   I kept at it.  I found that pain was the best source of inspiration.  And eventually I got tired of the pain.  I remember the day I decided, if I have to suffer to be a poet, I won't be a poet.

I still write verse, but I fully acknowedge I'm no poet. (However I'm as happy as I've every been... and that's happy indeed.)

Advice on Writing from Modernity’s Greatest Writers

Advice on Writing from Modernity’s Greatest Writers | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

I recently stumbled upon a delightful little book calledAdvice to Writers, “a compendium of quotes, anecdotes, and writerly wisdom from a dazzling array of literary lights,” originally published in 1999. From how to find a good agent to what makes characters compelling, it spans the entire spectrum of the aspirational and the utilitarian, covering grammar, genres, material, money, plot, plagiarism, and, of course, encouragement.

Role Reversal: Learning from a Master Teacher

Role Reversal: Learning from a Master Teacher | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

I had a most interesting experience last summer. I have taught college composition for many years, but I had not participated in a writing workshop as a writer for a long time. Of course, I had regularly run workshops in my classroom. But this time, I had written a short, 600-word essay, and it was workshopped (which to those of us in composition means reviewed and critiqued) by my peers as part of a larger in-service on curiosity and writing.

Writing teachers writing and learning--- a recipe for life long thinking.

Nourishing the writer in the writing teacher.

Nourishing the writer in the writing teacher. | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

I keep returning to two central ideas: our kids have stories to tell, and, as their writing teachers, we needed to write ourselves.  Here’s how Graves put it in an interview with Scholastic Instructor:

“ Write yourself. Invite children to do something you’re already doing. If you’re not doing it, Hey, the kids say, I can’t wait to grow up and not have to write, like you. They know. And for the short term and the long term, you’ll be doing yourself a favor by writing. All of us need it as a survival tool in a very complex world. The wonderful thing about writing is that it separates the meaningless and the trivial from what is really important. So we need it for ourselves and then we need to invite children to do what we’re doing. You can’t ask someone to sing a duet with you until you know the tune yourself.”
