Writing Our Lives: A History of Hosting Writing Conferences for Youth

Writing Our Lives: A History of Hosting Writing Conferences for Youth | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it
Since 2009, youth in central New York have had opportunities to participate in Writing Our Lives conferences and afterschool programs in support of the writing they do. Dr. Marcelle Haddix, originator of Writing Our Lives, and Dr. Bryan Ripley Crandall, Director of Connecticut Writing Project-Fairfield, have collaborated to provide locations and opportunities for young people to ‘speak their truth’ during community events in a celebration of writing. To date, over a dozen Writing Our Lives conferences have been hosted in Central New York, southern Connecticut, and even New York City. These conferences provide workshops that are led by professional writers, youth advocates, and performers. Writing Our Lives - A History of Hosting Writing Conferences For Youth offers a history of the work and shares ideas for supporting in- and out-of-school opportunities for writing.

Clarity Through Brevity: Integrating Six-Word Memoirs

Clarity Through Brevity: Integrating Six-Word Memoirs | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it
At its core, the six-word memoir teaches us to be concise but also introspective. Try describing yourself in six words. Not easy, right?

So how does the six-word memoir make sense in a history class? As a history teacher, I am always looking to integrate my class with as many different disciplines as possible. I also try to turn my students away from being just consumers of information and toward being global creators of everything cool. When I learned that the National Writing Project teamed up with Mozilla to create a Thimble webmaking application for six-word memoirs, I began to realize the potential this could have in my history classes.

National Writing Project Offers High-Quality Writing Assessment Services - National Writing Project | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Summary:

Over the past 8 years, the National Writing Project created and refined the Analytic Writing Continuum (AWC) Assessment System, originally based on the framework of the Six +1 Trait Writing Model (Bellamy, 2005), for research and instructional purposes. Unlike the holistic scores used in most large-scale writing assessments, which offer limited information about how improvements in student writing may be achieved, the AWC provides accurate assessment of both holistic and important performance attributes of writing.

Rebekah Caplan: Writers in Training

Rebekah Caplan: Writers in Training | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

From an Amazon Review:

I've been using this book in various teaching situations ranging from one-on-one tutoring to mini-courses to classroom situations for over 15 years. PUT IT BACK IN PRINT. PROMOTE IT. It is the single best book on the teaching of writing I've ever seen. It gets right to the heart of what good writing is, shows how to give writers lots of practice in mastering the skill, shows how to give them practice in evaluating their own and others' work and builds real writing skills without the artificial exercises found in so many other books. There's nothing else like it around.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I worked with Rebekah Caplan when I was a School District Language Arts coordinator in Northern Nevada back in the 1980's.  She was a remarkable writing teacher.

Scoop up this book for a few dollars!  It's a gem.

Writing Undergoes Renaissance in Curricula - National Writing Project

Writing Undergoes Renaissance in Curricula - National Writing Project | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Summary: Various forces, such as the Common Core State Standards, are bringing about a newfound focus on writing instruction for teachers. One of these teachers is Linda Denstaedt, co-director of the Oakland Writing Project in Michigan, who uses strategies such as the "multidraft read" in order to encourage her students to approach reading like a writer.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I like the angle of this articler.  The common core standards provide real punch for a radical revision of writing curriculum across the country.  The critical thinking basis of the standards is a natural fit for many modes of writing.  Let's leverage this change to create a new emphasis on writing!
