Although we believe that students need to develop the skills necessary to prepare a thoughtful, well-written, inquiry-driven research paper, our students have many other engaging product options. They can acquire subject knowledge and develop transferable information literacy and technology skills through a variety of creative activities. The following is a list of some alternative assessments for your class. For any research product or response to literature, consider how we might offer video, digital storytelling and publishing, art, drama, or presentation as an option for students to creatively communicate/share/publish/broadcast the knowledge they have gained.
Surely you were made to read one of John Steinbeck’s seminal works at some point in your high school career. Hopefully you enjoyed one of them, be that his novella Of Mice and Men, his classic The Grapes of Wrath, or what Steinbeck called his finest work East of Eden. Most of his literature can be classified as Dust Bowl fiction depicting tales of common people during the Great Depression. Steinbeck had an extraordinary career, receiving the Pulitzer Prize for The Grapes of Wrath, and eventually being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. Much can be gleaned from his masterful writing. Here are a few storytelling tips from Steinbeck himself.
The thread of a well stitched and crafted story can weave together the fabric for a magnificent quilt that can warmly invite people to take notice of your business, cause and even leadership style. A beautiful patch-work quilt creatively and deliberately depicts stories of people and in many ways can begin to art their life portfolio. Jagged cut outs of courage, odd shapes of challenge, open circles of change all make for wonderful conversation. No matter our age or our occupation in life, colourful, child-like imagination always makes for quite a spread! Great storytelling is illuminating and contagious too. It will encourage you to shine and share!
