Ted Talks: Novelist Chimamanda Adichie: The danger of a single story - YouTube

Uploaded on Oct 7, 2009
http://www.ted.com Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This is a video about finding your cultural voice. It speaks directly to the quest for voice that each writer (young and old) must pursue.

Magic and Storytelling — A Kinect-enhanced augmented reality performance | Kinect Hacks

Magic and Storytelling — A Kinect-enhanced augmented reality performance | Kinect Hacks | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

“Magic and Storytelling is an interactive presentation about the history of storytelling augmented with virtual magic in real-time. It was produced and created by New York based cyber illusionist Marco Tempest in collaboration with onformative and checksum5. When Marco asked us to work on the art direction for Magic and Storytelling we were fascinated by the challenge of combining not only several new technologies, but also giving the whole presentation a homogenous and magical look. In order to achieve this we developed a variety of different particle systems.”

Storytelling and the Art of Writing Resonant Copy

Storytelling and the Art of Writing Resonant Copy | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Everyone loves a good story. That’s why so many great ads rely on storytelling.

A good storyteller draws us in and holds us tight. As marketers, that’s exactly the kind of focus and engagement we’d like our ads to create. Plus, a good story begs retelling. In the social-media world, this translates into greater sharing and stickiness and, in the conventional ad world, into frequency and distribution. As unlikely as it may seem, even a 60-word ad can (and should) offer just such an engaging narrative.

Although we believe that students need to develop the skills necessary to prepare a thoughtful, well-written, inquiry-driven research paper, our students have many other engaging product options. They can acquire subject knowledge and develop transferable information literacy and technology skills through a variety of creative activities. The following is a list of some alternative assessments for your class. For any research product or response to literature, consider how we might offer video, digital storytelling and publishing, art, drama, or presentation as an option for students to creatively communicate/share/publish/broadcast the knowledge they have gained.

Storytelling Tips from John Steinbeck

Storytelling Tips from John Steinbeck | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Surely you were made to read one of John Steinbeck’s seminal works at some point in your high school career. Hopefully you enjoyed one of them, be that his novella Of Mice and Men, his classic The Grapes of Wrath, or what Steinbeck called his finest work East of Eden. Most of his literature can be classified as Dust Bowl fiction depicting tales of common people during the Great Depression. Steinbeck had an extraordinary career, receiving the Pulitzer Prize for The Grapes of Wrath, and eventually being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. Much can be gleaned from his masterful writing. Here are a few storytelling tips from Steinbeck himself.

Storytelling is Everyone’s Business

Storytelling is Everyone’s Business | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

The thread of a well stitched and crafted story can weave together the fabric for a magnificent quilt that can warmly invite people to take notice of your business, cause and even leadership style. A beautiful patch-work quilt creatively and deliberately depicts stories of people and in many ways can begin to art their life portfolio. Jagged cut outs of courage, odd shapes of challenge, open circles of change all make for wonderful conversation. No matter our age or our occupation in life, colourful, child-like imagination always makes for quite a spread! Great storytelling is illuminating and contagious too. It will encourage you to shine and share!
