What Poetry Teaches Us About the Power of Persuasion

What Poetry Teaches Us About the Power of Persuasion | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

DOROTHEA LASKY - Dorothea Lasky is the author of three poetry collections including, most recently, Thunderbird.

A few years ago, I was working for a science teacher professional development program. My job was to go into schools and watch how high school science teachers were integrating the program's curriculum and content into their lessons. Not many people knew that I was a poet, not a science teacher. In fact, everyone around me asked me science questions. Like "What is the normal sugar level for someone with diabetes?" Or "Why do metals behave differently at different size scales?" These were not questions I could answer easily, but I did my best. I hid my poet self relatively well.

I didn't expect to find any poets there, but I did.

Writers Write | Poetry for beginners

Writers Write | Poetry for beginners | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it
by Amanda Patterson

Sound is how we identify poetry. Everyone finds it difficult to forget rhythmical poetry. Children love it. The most important element of poetry is that it should ‘sound right’ when it is read aloud. It should flow without effort. Poetry allows you to play with words – to manipulate, to suggest, to twist and to turn words inside out. The fundamentals of poetry and prose are the same. However, poetry forces us to experience the human condition in its most naked form. It is also to there to entertain.

The Incomparable Naomi Shihab Nye on Kindness

The Incomparable Naomi Shihab Nye on Kindness | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it
The poems of Naomi Shihab Nye have an uncanny way of showing up at exactly the right moment to summon you below the surface of your life.

"Once we have the experience of absorbing a poem and feeling that appetite satisfied, then we have access to a language that is devoted to transporting the spirit. Just as there is something inside a compass that causes it to always return to true North, so there is something in poetry that can harmonize and refocus us."

eduflections: Celebrating National Poetry Month | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

In celebration of April being National Poetry Month, I thought I would host a Linky Party. One of my most popular blog posts is What's in Your Writing Toolbelt? where I shared our 10 favorite publishing tools. I know how much we love learning something new that we can use in our own classrooms to support our students' learning. The most powerful way that we can learn is from one another. A Link Party is a great way we can share what we love with others in our PLN. Please share links to your favorite poetry website, resources, lessons, blogs or publishing tools that we can use to celebrate National Poetry Month with our learners.

WritingFix Projects: Poetry Lessons & Prompts

WritingFix Projects: Poetry Lessons & Prompts | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

How did this page of lessons come about? Since the 1990's our Northern Nevada Writing Project has sponsored annual poetry events for students and teachers in Nevada. In 2001, when we launched the WritingFix website, we began posting many of the demonstration lessons from past workshops, and we began posting new lessons that were being created by our NNWP Teacher Consultants and teachers taking our inservice classes. This page began taking shape as our "poetry collection" in 2002.
