Local Site Research Initiative: Results and Reflections - National Writing Project

Local Site Research Initiative: Results and Reflections - National Writing Project | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

All five studies analyzed pre/post student writing samples. The writing, with identifying information removed, was independently evaluated at NWP's national scoring conference. Building on a long tradition of writing assessment, the NWP defined a rigorous framework for evaluating student writing, using "anchor papers"—samples exemplifying each level of achievement—along with descriptive commentary.

More than 7,500 writing samples were scored using a rubric adapted from the 6+1 Traits Writing Model (Culham 2003). The four-point scale was extended to six points in order to increase sensitivity, and language was clarified to enhance reliability.

The rubric addressed six specific attributes of writing: ideas, organization, voice, sentence fluency, word choice, and conventions (Bellamy 2005). Each writing sample also received an overall holistic score.

Extract from Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech. Shows examples of persuasive devices. Useful as an aide-mémoire.

Hello - I am the original creator of this resource and originally uploaded it to TES in the United Kingdom. We used it as part of a broader speech-writing task. Some classes also compared it to speeches by Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth I of England, a Barack Obama. I hope you find it useful.

A Step-by-Step Approach to Persuasive Writing

A Step-by-Step Approach to Persuasive Writing | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it
Do you use the PEEL technique for persuasive writing? This technique makes your argument easy to follow because it uses reason as well as emotion.

There’s more than one way to win an argument.
Ancient Greek philosopher and polymath Aristotle developed his own philosophy on the best way to beat an opponent using words. He called this rhetoric.
Rhetoric, Aristotle said, is “the ability, in each particular case, to see the available means of persuasion.”

A Simple but Effective Tip for More Engaging, Persuasive Writing

Don’t just tell me your brother is talented… show me what he can do, and let me decide whether I’m impressed. To convince your readers, show, don’t just tell them what you want them to know.

There. I’ve just told you something. Pretty boring, huh? Now, let me show you...

Persuasive Writing is a Key Focus in Common Core Standards | Edutopia | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it
Regardless of the subject, persuasive writing is a key component of Common Core Standards.

In my department, English Language Arts, we are already spinning Literary Analysis into a literary persuasive composition in order to address the future of this more meaningful writing. Rather than teach two compartmentalized writing genres, doesn't it make more sense to blend the two and have the student convince the reader of the theme or the character change or the author's intent? It comes at analysis from a different, more authentic angle.

As an English teacher, I’ve had numerous conversations with college professors who lament the writing skills of their first year students. But not all writing. Most students are capable of solid expository writing. It’s their skill with persuasive writing that’s the problem. Specifically, they’re weak at writing a thesis statement that can be argued.

WritingFix: Genres and Modes...Persuasive Writing Resources

WritingFix: Genres and Modes...Persuasive Writing Resources | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Even though our students learn basic persuasive writing skills long before they come to school ("I'll be really quiet if you buy me that toy"), they don't come to us knowing how to write persuasively. Writing is different than speaking. To persuade through writing, students need to analyze how they successfully convince others through speaking, then combine those skills with solid writing instruction.

What we've learned is that there must be a strong foundation of other writing skills in place before asking students to write something persuasive. Without the foundation, the persuasive writing your students will do will be flat and uninteresting.
