Luci Tapahonso is the author of several collections of poetry, including A Radiant Curve andBlue Horses Rush In.
We've been featuring of late transcription from Allen's 1976 summer-session teaching at Naropa Institute - Spontaneous Poetics. Alongside of that (and alongside all the other classes) there was also a lively reading-series at Naropa that year (which Allen actively participated in), perhaps the highlight of which was his own June 16 reading with Michael McClure (the introduction is by Anne Waldman).
Just this morning I was reading about the life and work of the great Japanese Haiku poet Issa. I was introduced to this form, and Issa in particular by my high school english teacher Denis Huckaby. Now, fifty years later the echo of that first discovery is still faintly ringing my inner ear.

DOROTHEA LASKY - Dorothea Lasky is the author of three poetry collections including, most recently, Thunderbird.
A few years ago, I was working for a science teacher professional development program. My job was to go into schools and watch how high school science teachers were integrating the program's curriculum and content into their lessons. Not many people knew that I was a poet, not a science teacher. In fact, everyone around me asked me science questions. Like "What is the normal sugar level for someone with diabetes?" Or "Why do metals behave differently at different size scales?" These were not questions I could answer easily, but I did my best. I hid my poet self relatively well. See full coverage
I didn't expect to find any poets there, but I did.
It may at first seem of little import, but for a poet who paid such exacting attention to typography, it must be said once and for all that his name should be written and printed with the usual capital letters in their usual places: "E. E. Cummings.''

Today’s writing prompts are inspired by poetry but that doesn’t mean they have to inspire a poem. Use them to write anything you want; a short story, a blog post, a journal entry, or a freewrite. You might even try writing a song, keeping in mind that song lyrics are a type of poetry in their own right.
Let me start with this: We need poetry. We really do. Poetry promotes literacy, builds community, and fosters emotional resilience. It can cross boundaries that little else can. April is National Poetry Month.

How Poetry Comes to Me It comes blundering over the Boulders at night, it stays Frightened outside the Range of my campfire I go to meet it at the Edge of the light
There is still time to plan for April as Poetry Month. With the iPad and web tools, technology can take motivation and ideas to a whole new level.

Here's one of my original writer's notebook lessons. To assist our students as they pre-write in their Writer's Notebooks for ideas that will becomeWriting Workshop topics, my wonderful wife (Dena Harrison), a fabulous fellow NNWP Consultant (Jenny Hoy), and I conceived and created nineChoice Menus for Notebooks/Workshop during a recertification class we took during Spring Break of 2012. In August of 2012, we will make available for the first time the entire set of nine menus which we will begin using this September. Each culturally-themed menu comes with five sections, each with three choices: appetizers, soup, salad, entrees, and desserts. Students can earn a special notebook sticker by making a complete "meal" using the different sections of the menu.

The poems of Naomi Shihab Nye have an uncanny way of showing up at exactly the right moment to summon you below the surface of your life.
"Once we have the experience of absorbing a poem and feeling that appetite satisfied, then we have access to a language that is devoted to transporting the spirit. Just as there is something inside a compass that causes it to always return to true North, so there is something in poetry that can harmonize and refocus us."
Professors may not have much grading to do during dead week, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t busy. The 1078 Gallery got a taste of some of Chico State’s own creative works Friday evening.
Some say the world will end in fire, / Some say in ice. / From what I’ve tasted of desire / I hold with those who favor fire.
