Funded under the Supporting Effective Educators Development (SEED) program was the National Writing Project. Based in Berkeley, Calif., the NWP will use its $11.3 million grant to train 3,000 K-12 teacher-leaders in the teaching of writing, who will then conduct professional development for teachers in local schools and districts in all 50 states.

Many students begin news articles with who, what, where, when.....boring. Help the reader know why they should care. Respect the audience by creating meaning and giving insight.

The most meaningful writing students can do is to write their memoirs, notes Greg Graham, who teaches writing at the University of Central Arkansas. "Putting a narrative frame on our past -- especially our struggles -- promotes perspective and self-awareness that are otherwise out of reach for most people," he writes. The benefits of memoir writing are demonstrated through the movie "Precious," Graham writes, in which an abused teenage girl is able to make headway in life through writing. There is an expected research paper voice and while the mode is driven by organization, voice still plays a part in this form of writing.

A good storyteller draws us in and holds us tight. As marketers, that’s exactly the kind of focus and engagement we’d like our ads to create. Plus, a good story begs retelling. In the social-media world, this translates into greater sharing and stickiness and, in the conventional ad world, into frequency and distribution. The Essay Map is an interactive graphic organizer that enables students to organize and outline their ideas for an informational, definitional, or descriptive essay. Expository writing is an increasingly important skill for elementary, middle, and high school students to master. This interactive graphic organizer helps students develop an outline that includes an introductory statement, main ideas they want to discuss or describe, supporting details, and a conclusion that summarizes the main ideas. The tool offers multiple ways to navigate information including a graphic in the upper right-hand corner that allows students to move around the map without having to work in a linear fashion. The finished map can be saved, e-mailed, or printed.

Hardly a week goes by that I’m not asked about the differences between modes, genres, and formats. I admit, it’s pretty confusing out there when you try to sort it out on your own. Here is how I keep the terms separate in my work–I hope it helps you, too.

At face value, the lines between verbal irony, sarcasm, and compliments can be blurry. After all, the phrase 'That looks nice' could be all three depending on the circumstances.

The problem with rote memorization of a writing organizational formula is that it has no context. The kids don't understand why they are using the form. They just memorize the basics and stumble on. This usually means they know they need five paragraphs: 1 intro 3 body 1 concluding. Hardly a universal formula for organizing writing. But that's what is usually taught (and often nothing else.)

Phillip Lopate is considered by many to be one of the most important essayists of our time, a writer and editor at the fulcrum of memoir's resurgence who has contributed significantly to discourse on creative nonfiction.
