WritingFix Projects: Poetry Lessons & Prompts

WritingFix Projects: Poetry Lessons & Prompts | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

How did this page of lessons come about? Since the 1990's our Northern Nevada Writing Project has sponsored annual poetry events for students and teachers in Nevada. In 2001, when we launched the WritingFix website, we began posting many of the demonstration lessons from past workshops, and we began posting new lessons that were being created by our NNWP Teacher Consultants and teachers taking our inservice classes. This page began taking shape as our "poetry collection" in 2002.

This page contains idea development lessons and resources that we consider appropriate for sharing with third graders and up. WritingFix Projects: The "Mentor Text of the Year" Network

WritingFix Projects: The "Mentor Text of the Year" Network | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Occasionally a great classroom mentor text is about a topic we're very fond of here at WritingFix: how to write better. A mentor text on this topic deserves to be brought out again and again (and again) in a school year.

Our Mentor Text of the Year program chooses a different book each year that shares advice on writing from a published writer. Teachers users of WritingFix are invited to purchase the text, incorporate it into a writing lesson, then share how they used the book at our Mentor Text of the Year Network. Our favorite ideas submitted to the network will be published here at WritingFix, and teachers whose ideas are published will be sent a complimentary copy of one of the Northern Nevada Writing Project's Print Publications.

Always Write: Corbett's "Teaching Critical Thinking with the Writing Traits" Teacher Workshop

Always Write: Corbett's "Teaching Critical Thinking with the Writing Traits" Teacher Workshop | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Common Core State Standards-friendly Workshops: Building Critical Thinkers with Trait Language.

I spend the first twelve weeks of my school year teaching students to apply the language of the six writing traits to everything we read and everything we write. I do this diligently, as though the success of the entire school year depends upon it. Why? This establishes a vocabulary for writing, and I am a true believer that you can't teach writing well if you don't have a vocabulary to discuss it with your students. Giving my students--early on--better ownership of trait-inspired language becomes the single best investment of time that I make while building my community of readers and writers.

WritingFix: Genres and Modes...Persuasive Writing Resources

WritingFix: Genres and Modes...Persuasive Writing Resources | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Even though our students learn basic persuasive writing skills long before they come to school ("I'll be really quiet if you buy me that toy"), they don't come to us knowing how to write persuasively. Writing is different than speaking. To persuade through writing, students need to analyze how they successfully convince others through speaking, then combine those skills with solid writing instruction.

What we've learned is that there must be a strong foundation of other writing skills in place before asking students to write something persuasive. Without the foundation, the persuasive writing your students will do will be flat and uninteresting.

About WritingFix: Our Bibliography of Mentor Texts | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

A Bibliography for Teachers & Librarians: There are a lot of published books that share lists of mentor texts for teaching writing; the book at right is one example. This page at WritingFix--we believe--is much more thorough than just about every book in print we've found. We've spent almost ten years creating the list of books below.

WritingFix: Conventions Resources and Lessons:, Spelling | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Each of the six writing traits--conventions included--can be broken down into multiple smaller writing skills that--when working together--make-up the bigger trait. Below, find some of our webmaster's favorite resources and lessons that focus specifically on just one of convention's sub-skill: spelling . A great writing teacher finds the time to teach conventional skills in context, which means the students apply the skills to a piece of writing they are creating, not a piece of writing that a daily oral language drill has provided.

WritingFix: Right-brained Writing Prompts

WritingFix: Right-brained Writing Prompts | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

WritingFix believes this: No one writes with just the right side of his/her brain. The human brain is too complex and too cross-wired to ever believe that.

We do believe this too: Ideas that spark a writer's inspiration can start on the right-side of the brain. And for that reason, all writing activities categorized on this page celebrate a right-brained approach to beginning a piece of writing. This page celebrates approaches that are serendipitous and random. This page celebrates approaches that are recklessly creative.

Always Write: Corbett Harrison's Always Write Website

Always Write: Corbett Harrison's Always Write Website | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

"We write to prove that we think." So read the sign I hung above my classroom door on the day I finally became the writing teacher I had set out to become. It took me many years of hard work to believe I had learned enough to make that sign and use its words as my classroom motto. Those years of hard work remain the best investment I've ever made for my teaching career.

WritingFix: Genres...Narrative & Memoir

WritingFix: Genres...Narrative & Memoir | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

How did this page of resources come about? The 2009-2010 school year was our Year of Narrative Writing at WritingFix and in Northern Nevada. We hosted inservice workshops for 100 lucky teacher teachers, where we gave away, read, and discussed Ralph Fletcher's How to Write Your Life Story as well as his Marshfield Dreams: When I Was a Kid. We sponsored the creation of new narrative resources, especially for grades 3-5, since our Nevada fifth graders are tested using a narrative writing prompt. Those resources ultimately became a new print guide for all Northern Nevada teachers in March of 2011. Below, you can find out how you can obtain your own copy of our "Show Me Your Story" Print Guide.

On this free-to-access page of resources, you will find the best-of-the-best narrative resources that were created as part of our Year of Narrative Writing.
