Troy Hicks: Thinking Through a Digital Deliberation, Part 2: Handwriting and Typing Curricula and Websites

Troy Hicks: Thinking Through a Digital Deliberation, Part 2: Handwriting and Typing Curricula and Websites | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it
As a parent, I have always said that, of course, I want my children to know how to write (in this case, I mean “handwriting”) and how to type. Even that conversation brings up some tension in our home as we think about our two girls who are “all thumbs” with their phone-typing, and two of our boys who, at best, write in school only because they “have to.” Legible handwriting (let alone cursive) is a battle for nearly all our kids, one that my wife and I have, in all honesty, fight hard each September but then give up on as the school year progresses.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

As I read this article my eyes began to cross.  What I appreciate about this article is Troy's honest voice as he attempts to parse the weeds of various standards and website claims about the efficacy of touch typing and the importance of handwriting.

I chose the refreshing Parent Point of View statement Troy provides because it reflects the real world of sending your kids to school

“Ok, I’m ready to print,” said Jack, a happy-go-lucky third grader.Glancing at him skeptically, I replied, “What? You typed the whole thing?”“I didn’t type… I used my voice.” Jack said.Sure enough, when I looked at his screen, Jack’s writing task was completed, a feat that would have been impossible.."

Troy Hicks: Thinking Through a Digital Deliberation: Handwriting and Typing

Troy Hicks: Thinking Through a Digital Deliberation: Handwriting and Typing | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it
In less than a month, I will be traveling to Rhode Island to participate in the fourth annual Summer Institute in Digital Literacy, and part of my role will be to kick off a session on “Digital Deliberations,” specifically on the topic of “typing vs. handwriting.”
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This is part one of an intriguing series about handwriting and typing.  Troy Hicks brings a scholar's mind and a parents real world point of view to this ongoing topic of interest.

As a young teacher, long before the turn of the century,  I recall fiery staff room debates on what might happen if students started using word processing software.

I saw the clear path from touch typing to the flow of keyboard composition. Others saw the '...tools of the devil!"

Ironically, I ended up being responsible in my district for replacing IBM Selectrics with Apple //s & WordStar.

Take a look! Troy Hicks gives us a fascinating read for the word nerd in all of us!
