Lost my voice?  I’m not sure I ever found it in the first place.

We hear about finding one’s voice all the time (in the land of writers, that is), but just what does that mean?

Video:Conferring with an Avatar: Using Voki for Proofreading

I've always taught the importance of reading a paper aloud.  Every writer should do this when proofreading.  Using an avatar as a part of the process makes sense.  I've used VOKI, but this use never occurred to me.  What do you think? ~ Dennis

---------------

Students use text-to-speech software (Web 2.0 Avatars) to listen to their writing aloud. We use this 21st century method for proofreading when students do not read over their writing or are unaware of mistakes in their story. Students use this self-discovery strategy of revision and editing in order to privately critique their own work before conferring with the teacher.

Writing Traits: Teaching the Skills of Idea Development
teacher-created resources and lessons...all focused on skills that make up the idea development trait

Idea development is a complex trait that should be discussed, explored, and further developed every year that students learn to write in school; both kindergartners and high school seniors can be taught to think about developmentally appropriate skills that are associated with idea development. This page contains idea development lessons and resources that we consider appropriate for sharing with third graders and up. If you are working with primary writers and the six traits, be sure to visit WritingFix's 6 Traits and Primary Writing Homepage.

Looking for a summer learning experience that improves your skills as a writing teacher?  I recommend the following online course, which friend of WritingFix and Always Write--Dennis O'Connor--has helped coordinate this class for many years.  You simply can't maintain a functioning workshop environment for writing if students don't own the vocabulary of writing instruction, and the 6 Traits have been the academic language of choice we've used in my classroom for years!

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Many thanks to Corbett Harrison, creator of the great WritingFix website for recommending our class Teaching and Assessing Writing with the 6-Traits.

6 Traits of Writing | 6-Traits Songs Upgrade

6 Traits of Writing | 6-Traits Songs Upgrade | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it
Elizabeth Werner, 4th grade teacher at Reagan Elementary (Brownsburg, IN), initially used Ruth Culham's 6-Traits songs to introduce the writing traits to her students. But her students wanted something more modern. Being a musical learner herself, Elizabeth saw the value in meeting her students' learning needs. She began listening to some popular songs that she knew her students were familiar with. She listened to the choruses and began to consider how she could rewrite the trait songs to fit these new tunes.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

It's been many years since I taught Elementary school, but I can still recognize kids having fun and learning. Singing about the Traits? Why not.  Here's a link to the YouTube Playlist as well!
