Cracking the Code: Librarians Acquiring Essential Coding Skills

Cracking the Code: Librarians Acquiring Essential Coding Skills | 404 BC -- Finding the Missing Links | Scoop.it
By Matt Enis on March 6, 2013 FROM
Filipe MS Bento's insight:

"

For newcomers, computer source code can look quite alien. Librarians might be reminded of the first time they saw a MARC record—a mishmash of recognizable words and bits of information embedded in funky punctuation.

Even people who expressed an early interest in computers as children can initially find themselves discouraged from learning more as adults. Andromeda Yelton, for example, recently reflected on her experience taking a required computer science class as part of her bachelor’s degree program in mathematics at California’s Harvey Mudd College, telling LJ that “I just felt like I was so far behind that there was no point in even trying.

Massive open online course

A massive open online course (MOOC) is an online course aiming at large-scale participation and open access via the web. MOOCs are a recent development in distance education and often use open educational resources. Typically they do not offer academic credit or charge tuition fees. Only about 10% of the tens of thousands of students who may sign up complete the course.[1]

MOOCs originated about 2008 within the open educational resources (or OER) movement. Many of the original courses were based on connectivist theory, emphasizing that learning and knowledge emerge from a network of connections. 2012 became "the year of the MOOC" as several well-financed providers, associated with top universities, emerged, including Coursera, Udacity, and edX.[2] Other universities scrambled to join in, as did more established online education providers such as Blackboard Inc, in what has been called a "stampede." Dozens of universities in Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia have announced partnerships with the large American MOOC providers.[3][4]

Features associated with early MOOCs, such as open licensing of content, open structure and learning goals, and connectivism may not be present in all MOOC projects.[5]

Filipe MS Bento's insight:

Looking for some good MOOC resources / directories; anyone care to share them, if knowing of some?

Hacking the Classroom: Beyond Design Thinking

Hacking the Classroom: Beyond Design Thinking | 404 BC -- Finding the Missing Links | Scoop.it

"Design Thinking is a great skill for students to acquire as part of their education.  But it is one process like the problem-solving model or the scientific method. As a step-by-step process, it becomes type of box.  Sometimes we need to go beyond that box; step outside of the box. This post provides an overview of design thinking, the problems with design thinking, and suggestions to hacking the world to go beyond design thinking."
