I especially like the solid examples of how a nonprofit can emphasize donor impact.

Open questions about open data

Open questions about open data | 404 BC -- Finding the Missing Links | Scoop.it
The open data movement could lead to a new era of community-led democratisation, but who will profit the most, asks Tom Slee

Filipe MS Bento's insight:

Linked Open Data (data placed in context by interconnecting several sources, data interlinked so to become more useful) and Open Data (raw data from research, census, public data, etc.): one word makes all the difference.

Openness in itself is not a virtue...(may be just a "basic"?)

luiy's curator insight, March 26, 2013 3:50 PM

Will the open data movement be a force for community-led democratisation or for a new wave of algorithm-driven corporate giants? There are worrying signs of the latter.

A recent white paper from CapGemini on unlocking economic value by opening up government and public data highlights Silicon Valley real-estate advertising company Zillow to show the economic benefits of open data. Built on open tax data, county records and home-for-sale listings, Zillow launched a free service last October, listing homes going through the foreclosure process – and also potentially exposing the owners' financial troubles to neighbours and employers. Is this reckless profiteering the democratisation we are looking for?

There is no doubt that more government data can usefully come out from Whitehall and local town halls, but we should not to be swept away by the appealing language of openness.

There is room for a number of models when providing access, including non-commercial licences, closed partnerships between cities and citizen groups, and the use of non-standard formats for sharing that reflect the quirks of individual cities. Each of these breaks the idea of "openness" in one way or another, but we should be prepared to do so.

Openness itself is not a virtue, and it's time the debate moved beyond it.

Why Social Is The Future Of Search

Why Social Is The Future Of Search | 404 BC -- Finding the Missing Links | Scoop.it

"Google wants to be a search engine that “understands exactly what you mean and gives you back exactly what you want.” To be able to accomplish this, Google and other search engines are integrating social media influence into their algorithms.

For this reason I believe the Future of Search will become less about what we can control and more about our ability to create valuable content that others will want to share".

Pierre Levy's curator insight, March 26, 2013 11:19 AM

First, then, a definition. Big data describes the idea that everything can be digitised and "datafied" – thanks to cheaper storage, faster processing and better algorithms. And that really means everything, from your current location or liking for strawberry pop tarts, to your propensity for misspelling and degree of personal compassion. And not just your data: everyone's data.

This changes science, say the authors, by ridding us of biased random samples and the need to massage the resulting data to make it sufficiently representative of a larger population. Could biased sample sets be at the root of many failed attempts to replicate experiments?

It all starts with a human question. Before machines generate answers, employees from many departments should feel empowered to ask good questions of data, said John Sotham, vice president of finance at BuildDirect.

Beyond questions, humans need to decide which algorithms to employ and which data to use to answer questions, said Scott Brave, founder and chief technology officer of Baynote.

In data science, machine use algorithms to make decisions with clean data for the sake of prediction and optimization, said Sean Gurley, chief technology officer of Quid. But in “data intelligence,” humans “create, change and shape the world we’re in” using small sets of messy data, he explained.

Conclusion

The possibilities of link building are endless. You can build links in many different ways, you just have to be creative. What I’ve learned over the years is the best link builders are the creative ones.

Just look at Matt Inman, no one would have thought that he would rank a site for online dating, but he was able to do it in a matter of months because of how he built links.

All you have to do is think outside the box as the list above is just scrapping the surface. What other creative ways are you building links?

How Digital Behavior Differs Among Millennials, Gen Xers and Boomers - eMarketer

How Digital Behavior Differs Among Millennials, Gen Xers and Boomers - eMarketer | 404 BC -- Finding the Missing Links | Scoop.it
Internet usage, and many online activities, have reached or are close to a saturation point in the mature US market—and that goes for usage among the young as well as older groups.
Filipe MS Bento's insight:

"

While internet usage is nearly ubiquitous in the US, mobile phone and mobile internet usage are taking a far greater role in digital activity among consumers of all ages—and uptake is poised for further growth.

eMarketer estimates that overall, 75.7% of the population goes online at least monthly, and penetration is even higher among younger demographic groups.

Among Gen Xers, for example—defined as people born between 1965 and 1980—88.8% were monthly internet users as of December 2012, according to eMarketer estimates.

Gen Xers are also highly connected on the go, with nearly 95% using mobile phones, and 60.3% of that group using smartphones. In 2012, 38.4 million Gen Xers, or 62.2% of Gen X mobile users, used the mobile internet at least monthly. That accounts for three in 10 mobile internet users in the US."
