There is a certain loss of playfulness in the learning process.  Everything has come to be about outcomes and usually an outcome defined from outside.  The question I keep coming back to is if we do away with whimsy and learning in serendipitous ways, are we not really doing away with the need for anything but child labor and apprenticeships?
