Launching a Makerspace: Lessons Learned

Launching a Makerspace: Lessons Learned  | 3D Virtual-Real Worlds: Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Excitement about school makerspaces has been in the air, but many educators eager to create hands-on learning spaces in their schools still aren’t sure how to get started or why it’s worth the effort. New Canaan High School librarian Michelle Luhtala recently jumped headfirst into creating a makerspace in her library and documented what she learned, how her space changed and how it affected students along the way. Her experience was very different from elementary school librarian Andy Plemmons, whose makerspace started with a 3-D printer obtained through a grant and blossomed into a core teaching resource at his school.

Here’s why you’re overlooking how much VR actually matters

Here’s why you’re overlooking how much VR actually matters  | 3D Virtual-Real Worlds: Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Virtual Reality seems like it’s been slow to pick up, that might just be because most of us have a terrible ability to see the huge change a new technology will have on the world.
It’s human nature to be a bedroom critic.
When the Wright brothers conducted the first flight ever in 1903, the press and most of the public, reacted with a shrug of their shoulders. It would be 5 years until the public reacted to the fact that lowly earth-bound humans were now actually able to fly.

Maria Angélica Morales Valencia's curator insight, September 21, 12:08 AM
Nowadays, games are very useful in teaching settings since it is very popular in children and adolescents population, “Specialists have discovered that game-based learning is the best experience not only for children but also for adults who need thrilling experiences to make learning easier” Teachers around the world, are trying to implement games in their teaching process as tools and new strategies to motivate and engage students in different subjects and topics. This new strategy is not only efficient, is funny and offer a lot of benefit to the learning process.
Sebastián Vásquez's curator insight, September 21, 9:51 PM
Game-based learning is a very powerful and engaging trend in terms of teaching. It has many different advantages such us varied ways of engaging students, learning while entertaining, raising motivation towards subject-matter content as well as providing an opportunity to understand things in different formats. Those are reasons why these types of teaching trends deserve a space into our classrooms. However, making of it the "future of education" would probably end up being the "torture of education" as it would make from diversity and riches of educational practices a total monotony by only having one way of doing things. This is a justification for the need of awareness about understanding the thin line between use and abuse.

Virtual Worlds and Education

Virtual Worlds and Education  | 3D Virtual-Real Worlds: Ed Tech | Scoop.it

I started using Second Life six years ago, while studying for my Postgraduate Diploma in Education (specializing in e-Learning Pedagogy). Since then, I've explored many other Virtual Worlds/Grids, like Kitely, InWorldz, other public and private OpenSim grids, as well as Sim-on-a-Stick (SoaS), and even the very promising (now apparently very dead) virtual-world-on-a-browser Cloud Party. Recently, I had the opportunity to share my views on the potencial of Second Life and other VW for education/training with educators who have never used any of these platforms.
