Makerbot Digitizer Will Let Anyone Scan and Print Physical Items in 3D | 3D PRINTING DEVELOPMENTS | Scoop.it

"Sort of like a copy/paste for real-world objects, the Digitizer works using two lasers and a webcam. The webcam sees where the lasers are shining off of an item, and wraps all those points up into a plan for a 3D model that can then be printed."

Daniel Booth's insight:

3D printers are great but what if you would like to recreate something you already have? Makerbot brings the Digitizer that is a scanner of objects then then can be sent to a printer

Great examples of how 3D Printing can be used to benefit humanity. The creation of food and organs is already becoming a reality!

Brandon Smart's curator insight, March 20, 2013 6:48 AM

PBS presents this video with the help of numerous personalities throughout the technological world, such as writers for popular technology magazines such as Wired. This video presents more basic information on 3D Printing, but expands on this by giving examples of how it can benefit individual fields. Of particular interest is the segment presented by Joseph Flaherty on 3D Printing in Medicine. This is an excellent example of how in the future, this technology will be used to benefit humanity. This will be very useful in my paper. The people involved in this video conclude that 3D Printing will be massive in the near future, and I need to find more sources to corroborate their views.

3D Printing Robot Produces Chairs And Tables From Recycled Waste

3D Printing Robot Produces Chairs And Tables From Recycled Waste | 3D PRINTING DEVELOPMENTS | Scoop.it

Two years ago, a Dutch student named Dirk Vander Kooij was designing furniture and preparing for his graduation project when he was inspired by an old 3D printer. So he got his hands on an industrial robot from a Chinese production line and reprogrammed it into a 3D printer to print furniture using recycled materials from old refrigerators."

Daniel Booth's insight:

This is the future, not only 3D printing but being able to use recyclable materials to produce furniture and not only in 1 design, variety and uniqueness are the key element here, and to be able to do it in 3 hours.

3D printing is an innovative rapid prototyping technology where molten plastic is laid down (printed) layer by layer to produce a 3 dimensional object. This is known as "additive manufacturing" as material is added to form the model rather than being machined off as in normal (subtractive manufacturing) forms of production."

First 3D printed skull implant made in South Windsor | ReminderNews | 3D PRINTING DEVELOPMENTS | Scoop.it

"A revolutionary medical milestone has been reached in the United States, and its origins are in Connecticut. For the first time, a polymer skull implant created from a 3D printer was used in surgery in the U.S., and that implant was designed and manufactured at Oxford Performance Materials (OPM) of South Windsor."

Daniel Booth's insight:

Think of it this way:

1. A person who has an impact to the skull goes to hospital,

2. Undergo the critical MRI and CAT scan,

3. This allows a slice file to be created which is then sent to the OPM staff where,

4. 3D printing recreates the desired part.
