Being a 3D modeller does not automatically mean that you are limited to creating art for games and movies. 3D modelling is now being implemented in modern medicine in many different forms.  The introduction of 3D printing allows science to take medicine to the next level by potentially enabling doctors to 3D print organs.

This software gives the engineers an opportunity to inspect the integrity of a structure prior to building. This information is vital to an engineer as it allows them time to plan ahead and solve complex problems.

All 3D software uses the same basic principles so once you learn how to 3D model in one program it is easy to learn the others.  3D modelling can be made easier by using a reference image in the program and building the model shape off the image. The key to getting better at 3D modelling is to model as much as possible in order to increase your experience.

However there are other industries that benefit from the use of 3D modelling such as architecture by making a 3D model of a new building to ensure customer satisfaction. Publishers also use 3D modelling in books to illustrate events or images that are difficult to obtain. Advertising and marketing use 3D modelling to depict their products in a perfect form. The science community uses 3D modelling in various simulations.

There are many different 3D modelling techniques currently being used in the game and entertainment industry. Some common modelling techniques are box or subdivision which is when the modeller starts with a basic shape such as a cube and then refines the desired shape. Edge contour modelling is also another technique in which the model is built in pieces by placing polygon faces along contours and then filling in the gaps. However there has been some innovation in 3D modelling with the introduction of 3D scanning by which a real world object is scanned and a program creates a 3D model of the object.
