Turning a jigsaw puzzle into a mobile phone – Project Ara

Turning a jigsaw puzzle into a mobile phone – Project Ara | 3D Me | Scoop.it
By Deelip Menezes I attended the first Ara Developers Conference held in Mountain View, California, last week, where I learned quite a bit about the innards of an Ara phone. The engineering that is going into this device is astounding. Imagine hot swapping a dying battery for a charged one without disconnecting your call. Mobile phones as we know them are going to change. Completely.
Rachael Dalton-Taggart's insight:

An in-person account of the Project Ara progress and developers conference from Deelip - one of our guys who is deeply involved in the entire effort.

3D Printing Helps Amanda Boxtel to Leave Wheelchair Behind

Amanda Boxtel didn’t think she’d ever walk again. After shattering four vertebrae in a 1992 skiing accident, she was left in a wheelchair, her legs paralyzed. But with the help of 3D printing, Amanda is standing and walking. Recently, Amanda debuted a 3D printed hybrid exoskeleton suit by Ekso Bionics and 3D Systems at a Singularity University-hosted event in Budapest, Hungary.

Rachael Dalton-Taggart's insight:

The power of Scanning and SLS printing creates a custom-fit exoskeleton. It's the life-changing things we think 3d printing should be about.

3D printing on-demand parts for ‘Gravity’. | 3D Me | Scoop.it
3D printing really shines when you need perfect end-use parts – but just a few of them. Compared to the cost of hand-crafting pieces or creating tools to manufacture, 3D printed on-demand parts from Quickparts deliver a very fast turnaround and cost-effective option. Movie prop makers have been quick to pick up on this, turning to Quickparts’ UK division (formerly known as CRDM) to deliver perfect props quickly.
Rachael Dalton-Taggart's insight:

Printing props for movies? Check. On-demand parts services like Quckparts mean you get the 3D prints you need without having to buy the equipment

Meet Sense, 3D Systems’ Cheap, Dead-Simple 3D Scanner For The Masses | TechCrunch | 3D Me | Scoop.it

South Carolina-based 3D Systems just recently outed a cheapish, consumer-friendly scanner called the Sense, and I swung by Engadget’s Expand show in New York this weekend to see the thing in action." ...
