A man of many talents, (including directing, screenwriting, editing, producing, and much more), and an impressive film portfolio to prove it, Robert Rodriguez is the perfect person to spotlight for this week’s Wisdom Wednesday.

Hits like Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Sin City and Machete are rife with his loyalty to his Southern roots and his taste for in-your-face violence and vengeful protagonists. And Rodriguez’s unique filmmaking style— abrupt cuts, fast-paced camera movements and intense zooms—are as signature to him as his hyper-vivid landscapes. Click to read more.

I am so happy that you shared this. I shared Nancy Duarte's Hero's Journey one day in the classroom because the internet was down and I couldn't give my regular presentation slides. Ten months later, students still tell me that I "ruin in a good way' their movie watching because they think of this cycle.

As The Times works on new ways to advertise, it will have to watch out for ethical pitfalls.

Quote "

Meanwhile, because The Times has more potential advertising for videos than it has videos to put it on, production has ramped up. Staff has doubled since last year, new video series have been added and video has been placed outside The Times’s pay wall, so that it’s free to all viewers. Even the popular Modern Love feature now has a video offering, done with animated illustrations. Rebecca Howard, general manager of video production, reports both to the executive editor, Jill Abramson, and to the executive vice president for digital products, Denise Warren. That dual reporting straddles the traditional wall between business and editorial concerns, meant to provide independence.

Ms. Howard thinks it’s necessary, saying, “There’s so much that’s woven together about what we’re doing.” As The Times decides where to put its finite resources, that blending of business and journalistic priorities is something to keep an eye on. Will the most newsworthy projects be the ones to get the green light, or will it be those that will generate the most traffic and thus appeal most to advertisers?"

'Who’s Watching and Why

The data from YouTube Analytics reveals something else is happing. The number one reason people click onTime Expired is as a suggested video. YouTube suggests our film to people who have been watching other feature-length films, often of questionable copyright status. These films don’t always have much in common with Time Expired, but they tend to be newish features with a mainstream sensibility. In other words, YouTube’s algorithms are connecting us with a global audience channel-surfing for movies. Our second biggest traffic source is searches with strings like “Hollywood”, “full movies”, and “comedy”. Most viewers aren’t searching for our film by name. They’re just looking for a movie to watch.'

When Game characters become #transmedia alive? Trevor, GTA 5s Fictional Player & Ludonarrative Dissonance

When Game characters become #transmedia alive? Trevor, GTA 5s Fictional Player & Ludonarrative Dissonance | 3D animation transmedia | Scoop.it
The purely sociopathic Grand Theft Auto player just seems like another character in a narrative designed to critique the game's shortcomings as a game, more a straw man than any real player that I know (or am).

Gary Hayes's curator insight, October 9, 2013 7:36 PM

Quote "

Of course, the conclusion of this episode in some way speaks the most to Rockstar’s decision to no longer tolerate ludonarrative dissonance in a GTA protagonist. After Johnny’s sickening apology and Trevor’s threats to sodomize Johnny, Trevor kills Johnny anyway. The dissonance of play and story dies with Johnny. And the player who is aware of GTA‘s tendency to create romanticized, semi-heroic criminals has been violated himself. “Your character,” a character that you have occupied and accomplished some good with, is violated, humiliated, and left in the desert to rot alongside both any kind of idealism and dissonance that GTA had established in its characters in the past.

The real-life fiction of what GTA is all about eradicates the actual fiction of games past. I guess that whoever it is that my Congressman and that mom on Larry King warned me about is now somewhere rubbing his hands together and twirling his moustache. The fictional player has been granted a life that seems just despicable enough to suit him."

Quote "Here in the Second Story Lab, we research new and emerging technologies that have the potential to enhance user experiences. As part of this ongoing quest, we are always on the lookout for new ways of sensing people in spaces. When we saw the depth-sensing camera at the Emerging Technologies exhibit area of Siggraph in 2008, we were intrigued by the possibilities. It would be several more years before the technology matured and was made available to us in the many forms we see today.

The advent of the depth-sensing camera has enabled us to sense people in new and innovative ways. As this technology has evolved over the last two years, we've been experimenting with and incorporating it into exhibit spaces. Through the use of these simple cameras, we have introduced new ways in which people can interact with media and vice versa. This video explores some of the applications and innovations we've developed in the world of depth-sensing technology. As we look forward to the next evolution in this emerging field, we are excited as ever about the possibilities it opens for interactive storytelling."

The animation legend’s first movie in five years — and probably his last ever -- “The Wind Rises” has become a box-office hit in Japan since opening in July and generated plenty of op-ed talk for its political content.
