For one thing, Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight trilogy, is involved as a producer as well as the co-author of the story on which the screenplay is based. For another, the cast, which includes Henry Cavill, Amy Adams and Michael Shannon, carries a gravitas we haven't seen in films since, well, The Dark Knight trilogy.

"The best animated film of the year is about a stick figure named Bill. Bill is the star of It’s Such a Beautiful Day, the latest from independent animator Don Hertzfeldt. Hertzfeldt is known for making sick, hilarious shorts films about endless dental procedures and balloons that turn on toddlers. As those descriptions suggest, his earlier shorts, which might be described as Looney Tunes directed by Franz Kafka, aren’t for everyone. Ironically, this was more or less the point of his 2000 short Rejected, and yet it still won over enough members of the Academy to get nominated for an Oscar."

Kafka’s Nightmare Tale, ‘A Country Doctor,’ Told in Award-Winning Japanese Animation
in Animation, Books, Literature | December 5th, 2012 1 Comment

Here’s a good story for a cold December night: Franz Kafka’s cryptic, hallucinatory tale of “A Country Doctor.”

Written in Prague during the icy winter of 1916-1917, Kafka’s story unfolds in one long paragraph like a fevered nightmare. “I was in great perplexity,” says the narrator, an old doctor, as he sets out in a blizzard at night on an urgent but vague mission. But he can’t go anywhere. His horse, worn out by the winter, has just died and his servant girl is going door to door pleading for help. A surreal sequence of events follow.

The Four Biggest Innovators in Animation | All That Is Interesting

The Four Biggest Innovators in Animation | All That Is Interesting | 3D animation transmedia | Scoop.it
These four animators helped shape and change animation throughout television and movie history.

"Émile Cohl was a French cartoonist and animator who is often referred to as “the father of the animated cartoon.” In 1907, Cohl began work at Gaumont, a motion picture studio who hired him as a scenarist, which is someone who came up with one-page story ideas for movies. It was between February and May of 1908 that Cohl made what is regarded as the first fully animated film: Fantasmagorie."

Read this story and more, watch the movies and have fun. It' really not today's mainstream, it's history and it's awesome :-)

Take Creative Control - An Ode to Creative Work

Take Creative Control - An Ode to Creative Work | 3D animation transmedia | Scoop.it
A film about the opportunity, hardship and responsibility of creative work.

"

Behind every great advancement, in every industry, there is a creative mind.

Creativity may come easy, but creation is hard.

The late nights spent trying, and failing, and trying again.

All the while, holding onto our vision.
Pushing what we see in our mind's eye into the world.

But our brilliance is being held captive by forces around us and within us.

Middle men who play us down while marking us up.
Not giving us credit. Getting us to work for free.

And worse, we get in the way of our own success.
We rely on chance encounters. We’re disorganized and isolated, liable to go unnoticed.

We can do better.

When creative minds come together, the sum exceeds all expectations.
We connect, we learn, we critique, and we prosper.

It's not about money or fame, it's about doing what we love.

It's about creating our greatest work on our own terms.
It’s about realizing that creativity is not just an opportunity - it's a responsibility.

Here's to unleashing our full potential.
For us, and for the world that awaits what we will do next; Take creative control."
