FIFO and DIDO: Be aware of the risks

FIFO and DIDO: Be aware of the risks | 360 - work rest and play | Scoop.it
The opportunity to work in a FIFO or DIDO role is an exciting prospect for many. Unfortunately the nature of this type of work also presents a number of psychological issues and risks for employees and their families.
Kara Burnell's insight:

Many members of my family are FIFO workers, all of them express the difficulty of being away from home, some more than others. If not for the money they would not choose this way of working. The conditions they work in and live in are paramount to their psychological health.

FIFO and DIDO are definitely areas where OHS needs to consider many elements to the health and safety of these workers.

Managing FIFO fatigue in mining

Managing FIFO fatigue in mining | 360 - work rest and play | Scoop.it
With 24/7 operations, heavy machinery, demanding rosters, intensive commutes, disruptive sleep environments and inexperienced workers, FIFO based working environments were always going to be a recipe for serious fatigue risk in Australian mining.
Kara Burnell's insight:

Managing FIFO fatigue is an interesting topic and as this article suggest there is a need for research and intervention into this phenomena.

This article encompasses a broad range of issues that may also be present in other workplaces, but, with FIFO the reality of continuous rosters, long working hours, camp culture and isolation from family and/or social supports can have a great impact on the wellbeing and productivity of FIFO workers.

Workplace bullies may face jail in Queensland as laws strengthened

Workplace bullies may face jail in Queensland as laws strengthened | 360 - work rest and play | Scoop.it
WORKPLACE bullies could be charged with stalking and face jail for the first time in Queensland.
Kara Burnell's insight:

There is so much literature on the internet about workplace bullying. when reading the comments on the bottom of this article I became concerned at the idea that the managers themselves can be the problem. It surely indicates the need for an independent body to protect people who are victims of workplace bullying and to enforce fines and punishment onto the perpetrators.

Kelly McGonigal: How to make stress your friend - YouTube

Stress. It makes your heart pound, your breathing quicken and your forehead sweat. But while stress has been made into a public health enemy, new research su...
Kara Burnell's insight:

The Better Health Chanel discusses how stress in the workplace is an increasing concern which bears great cost or loss for both employees and the employers.

It would seem that stress is not going to go away. The recent studies into stress as discussed in this video suggests that the way we view stress is the problem.

After viewing this video I was compelled to wonder if this research was to be contemplated, tested and found to be successful. Could it be incorporated into education and training?

If proven and effective, this new research could not only reduce the cost of stress to both employee and employer, but, it would stand to change the culture of community within the work place too.
