Dr. Deborah Brennan's curator insight, May 17, 2015 11:54 AM

Vygotsky talked of the Zone of Proximal Development, and this article is in line with that foundational philosophy about learning.  When we think about improving schools, both of Vygotsky and this article apply.  We need leaders, teachers, and students operating outside their comfort zone, taking risks, setting goals, and learning.  There is a danger in struggling schools to push too hard and move buying the productive zone for learning.  This article speaks well to that aspect of learning.  With good intentions, leaders at building, district, and state level often push a school and omits staff beyond the productive learning zone into the danger zone.  This is done through programs, initiatives, and monitoring often with the goal of providing support, but with the result of overwhelming the school and staff.

When we think of ways to boost knowledge retention in our learners, what works for students that are online also works for students in face2face classes. This post from SH!FT provides seven ways to help student retain knowledge. The visual above illustrates the concepts. The post provides additional information as well as links to

#1 - When possible, use diagrams. Many people are visual learners. Consider using graphic organizers to provide "holistic views, expressing relationships, and identifying contrasting data."

#2 - Incorporate unique and out-of-the ordinary images. Why? Images stay with us longer, and the more unique, the longer they tend to stay with us.

#3 - Dish out sensory details. The more details that engage the learner the better.

#4 - Use color therapy. Color works on many levels. Color can be used to organize, to grab our attention, and it can impact our mood.

The last 3 suggestions are below...but you will need to click through to the post to learn more about each.

#5 - Exaggerate.

#6 - Small bites, at one's own pace.

#7 - Spaced repetition.

Articles: How to Fix Higher Education: Bring on Creative Destruction | 3 D Television Laptop Tablets in Education & Infotainment | Scoop.it

"Target scholarship money toward students studying in fields where there are good job prospects."
"For students receiving government support or loans, require colleges to limit tuition charges to the actual cost of instruction. The purpose of student aid is to promote education, not to subsidize college bureaucracies."
"Limit student loans to reasonable amounts commensurate with reasonable estimates of the student’s potential for future earnings.  If a student defaults on repayment, the college should be made at least partially responsible."
"Cut back research funding by 30% and target research grants to academic areas important for the national economy and national defense.  Limit overhead grants to universities to a fixed percentage of research grants, a percentage that applies equally to all universities.  Universities should not be rewarded for having extravagant overhead expenses."
