Good news! As best I can tell, the poor performance of Google Alerts that has plagued Google’s monitoring service for months finally seems over. I asked, but Google won’t confirm that it’s made any changes.

| 2conleche | Scoop.it

Back at the turn of the century, blogging was in a nascent state. Over the next five years, many individuals and news organizations discovered the benefits of blogging. And soon after, brands began to realize that creating content (actually they just called it blogging back then) could greatly benefit both SEO efforts and brand awareness.

Then -- somewhere around 2008 -- blogging took a back seat to social media, and all anyone could talk about was platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare and, yes, even MySpace. Social media was all the rage, and blogging was, well, old and worn out.

| 2conleche | Scoop.it

This month’s Harvard Business Review has a spotlight on social media and branding, with a stand out article by McKinsey, based on a global study of 20,000 consumers.  In a nutshell, the article argues that many brands are spending their marketing budgets in all the wrong places, based on an outmoded “funnel” marketing model – and proposes an evidence-based alternative.

The article by David C Edelman – McKinsey Global Digital Marketing Strategy, and entitled “Branding in the Digital Age: You’re Spending Your Money in All the Wrong Places“ can be accessed here (pay-wall), but below you’ll find the speed summary, with implications for social commerce – we think it’s useful. And if you don’t have time for that, here’s the summary of the summary

| 2conleche | Scoop.it

“Technology has created a permanent fifth dimension in our lives – virtual space. Every time human beings have perceived a new dimension, it’s led to seismic changes in society. We moved from thinking in two dimensions in Medieval art to three dimensions in the Renaissance. In Dante, Heaven and Hell were in a direct line up and down. At the same time Copernicus and Galileo started to realize there was something called space, which completely undermined the whole notion of Heaven, because if space is infinite then where is Heaven? That fundamentally changed the way we see everything.”

The cost of doing business.

The cost of doing business.

Microsoft violated the terms of its settlement of an anti-trust case, says the European Commission, by failing to let users know that they could use a web browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer on their Windows-based PCs. This may seem like a very last-century thing to be fretting about, what with the rise of mobile browsers, which now have more than 10% of the total market for web browsing, but the Commission is almost certainly justified—Internet Explorer is still the dominant browser on the planet, and the share of people using it may have even edged up slightly in the past year.

Digital campaigns and traditional advertising are much like oil and water. Rarely do they mix together and when they do, it’s usually a case of tacking on Facebook integration for the sake of it. However, there are a number of great campaigns out there that thought outside the box and delivered some truly innovative campaigns that bridged the gap between real world and digital. | 2conleche | Scoop.it

The hundreds of millions of smart phones and tablets now in use across the world are harbingers of a revolution that goes well beyond what we think of as the mobile market today.  The original mobile market, which as a mass-market phenomenon is already more than 20 years old, was about accessibility in an always-on, always-connected world.  Wherever and whenever, mobile technology would keep us connected, first by voice, then via email, and now through social media. Mobile was a means to interact in real time with an increasingly interactive world.

Anonymous has compromised North Korea’s state-run news agency Uriminzokkiri’s website and social networks days after the hacktivist group declared open season on the country.

Anonymous’ efforts are in part due to the North Korea government’s (led by dictator Kim Jong-Un, parodied above) oppressive stance on allowing citizens to access the Internet, among other things. But the hacking was probably sparked by North Korea’s recent threats to attack the U.S. and South Korea.

ast June, Google acquired Quickoffice. In December, Google launched an iPad app. Google announced today that Quickoffice is now available for Android and iPhone.

“One of the easiest ways to share old files and collaborate with others is to convert them to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides,” writes product manager Mark Beaton in a blog post. “However, not everyone you work with has gone Google yet. So to help, Google Apps for Business can already edit Microsoft Office files using Quickoffice on an iPad, and starting today they can do the same on iPhone and Android devices. From Word to Excel to Powerpoint, you can make quick edits at the airport or from the back of a taxi and save and share everything in Google Drive.”

The app includes new “Shared With Me,” “Starred,” “Recent” and subfolders in a menu so you can easier find Drive files.

Revised forecasts by eMarketer place Facebook atop the mobile display advertising revenue list, with the research firm saying that the social network will account for $3 of every $10 spent in the sector in 2013, and adding that it boosted its projections following a stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter performance.

In terms of mobile ad revenues in general, eMarketer pegged Facebook at No. 2 overall, behind Google, and it said the social network’s share of the market would rise to 13.2 percent in 2013 from 9.5 percent in 2012.

| 2conleche | Scoop.it

The White House just announced a brand new research initiative focused on mapping the human brain, which sadly, does not involve a magic school bus.

The initiative, officially called the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies or BRAIN for short (get it!?), will get $100 million in funding when it launches in 2014. Its long-term goal is to find out how things react to brain cells — with a eye for finding better treatment for Alzheimer’s and epilepsy and making great advancements in the field of neuroscience. Senior officials in the Obama administrations told the New York Times that the initiative was comparable to the Human Genome Project that maps human DNA.

| 2conleche | Scoop.it

There's this misconception that marketers don't know how to do math. Instead of debating whether there's any validity to that statement (because that debate is ridiculous), let's help any marketers out there that aren't confident in their math skills. How? I figured we could start by explaining the math behind some common metrics we use every day -- or at least every month.

Whatever career path you choose in the marketing world, it'll do you a world of good to have an understanding of and level of comfort with the math behind the metrics you cite every month. These metrics allow you to assess the health of your marketing team, and show a more tangible impact of your team's activities. Armed with this information, you'll be able to make better decisions in long-term strategy, planning, and budgeting of your team, and walk into any presentation with the CMO or CEO and talk to these numbers with confidence. (Hint: We know the C-Suite cares about numbers like these because our own CMO Mike Volpe told us so in this blog post, "The 6 Marketing Metrics Your CEO Actually Cares About.")

| 2conleche | Scoop.it

In 1995, sales of pagers were booming among Japan’s teenagers, and NTT Docomo’s decision to add the heart symbol to its Pocket Bell devices let high school kids across the country inject a new level of sentiment (and cuteness) into the millions of messages they were keying into telephones every day. Docomo was thriving, with a bona fide must-have gadget on its hands and market share in the neighborhood of 40 percent. But when new versions of the Pocket Bell abandoned the heart symbol in favor of more business-friendly features like kanji and Latin alphabet support, the teenagers that made up Docomo’s core customer base had no problem leaving for upstart competitor Tokyo Telemessage. By the time Docomo realized it had misjudged the demand for business-focused pagers, it was badly in need of a new killer app. What it came up with was emoji.

Two heads are better than one. Just ask Watson and Crick, or Marie and Pierre Curie, or Abbot and Costello, or Hewlett and Packard, or… you get the point. Collaborators in business, science, and the arts have created ideas that nobody could have produced on their own. And while working together is nothing new, social media has made it possible to collaborate at unprecedented scale and speed. That’s why businesses are rapidly adopting social media in the workplace to improve productivity. HootSuite produced an interactive infographic to show how social media is transforming how business gets done. We chose a water cooler metaphor for social business because it is a traditional place where employees socialize, but more importantly, because the water bubbles demonstrate how fluid companies must be in today’s rapidly changing economy. The old, rigid organization chart is outdated; we wanted to hint at how social businesses are dynamically connecting people to create value.

#PeanutGallery | 2conleche | Scoop.it

Last month Google showed off its voice-recognition chops by launching Web Speech API support for its Chrome browser. Now they’re showing developers how to use it with a fun Chrome experiment.

In the Peanut Gallery, you can add intertitles to old black-and-white movies (the ones before any speech support, never mind the web). And you do it, of course, simply by talking to Chrome. The API uses your computer’s microphone after you give it permission, and Google turns it into written text embedded in an old movie.
