About iSchoolAfrica

About iSchoolAfrica | 21stC learning in low resource environments | Scoop.it

iSchoolAfrica aims to bring the best available education technology and practices to schools in South Africa.

iSchoolAfrica’s success and sustainability is a result of the following:

The mobile classroom - no complex infrastructure required

Each participating school is issued with: 1 mobile classroom containing12 MacBooks, 12 video cameras and 1 projector. This is kept in a secure, mobile case. The mobile classroom is an efficient way of deploying scarce resources and can be moved from classroom to classroom, ensuring integration into subject teaching and learning. It’s a tool for accelerated and collaborative learning.

Access to the world’s best educational technology

The critical piece of hardware is the MacBook, Apple’s special-purpose education laptop. This MacBook comes preloaded with the award-winning iLife suite of applications, which is the absolutely essential toolkit for the creation of multimedia projects - allowing learners to make movies, music, websites and more. This supports creative, challenge-based learning which is used by teachers and learners to create curriculum-relevant projects.

“Orphans are often treated as second class citizens and that creates a lasting impression on these young minds. Taking the same approach in education seemed counter intuitive, as our objective should be to empower them with the tools to get out of their current condition and become independent.” Neil DSouza

Teach A Class was started in 2010 when Neil Dsouza and Leila Al-Muthashib were planning their one-year sabbatical from Cisco Systems. Neil was thinking of spending a year in orphanages in Mongolia but without a specific project in mind.

Being a seasoned traveler, Neil had noticed that a lot of orphanages had computer labs but no internet access. That led to severe under-utilization of technology, and in some areas, technology was even considered an extravagant expense. The children had already been denied basic educational infrastructure; in an ironic twist, they were also being deprived of the online education revolution. The people who could benefit the most from such online resources as Khan Academy and ck12 were the ones who were denied access to them.
