A summary of the results from the 2012 Student Engagement Survey administered by the Learning Achievement Coalition of Oakland County, Michigan.

The survey was given to Teachers and 8th grade students in 13 middle schools in Oakland County

  Teacher surveys = 369  Students = 2,722

The results indicate that student and teacher perceptions differ on a variety of important measures.  Most glaring is about relationships:  teachers tend to focus on the group; students want to be known as individuals.

Our old technology — paper — gave us an idea of knowledge that said that knowledge comes from experts who are filtered, printed, and then it’s settled, because that’s how books work. Our new technology shows us we are complicit in knowing.

"The Wall Street crowd wants us to think of education in terms of means – which usually means finding ways to spend less – rather than ends.  But when it comes to education, the “ends” are our children. And the means we choose for them, either consciously or through indifference, reveal who we really are as a people."

I like some of these ideas. I'm thinking we could have students make podcast booktalks and have QR codes linking to them in the books or on a display or around the school. Hmm...kids can't use their phones at school, yet. Well, I can always put links to them in our catalog and on the website.
