4 Steps to Mindfulness

4 Steps to Mindfulness | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it

In today’s fast-paced world, we hardly have a spare minute to do the things for ourselves that help us stay energized and focused. By focusing for a few minutes a couple of times a day to intentionally breathe can completely change our disposition. A study out of the University of Pennsylvania shows that carving out a mere 12 minutes a day to do just that—intentionally breathe—can go a long way toward improving your mood. In addition, meditating can help you get better quality sleep, show more kindness towards others, and reduce inflammation.

Here are a series of mini-meditations you can call on throughout your day when you’re feeling like you are coming apart at the seams and need to find your center.

The power of intentional living and being in the moment heals and strengthens.

Annette Schmeling's curator insight, February 7, 2013 10:40 PM

Following these four simple steps daily will help make mindfulness a part of ordinary time and will open your heart and mind to the world in front of you.

Shane Davis's curator insight, March 10, 2013 3:19 AM

These are easy and they don't require any special conditions to do little mini-meditations. I did two of them before but the lunch one wasn't really my thing. I will be trying it to see how it makes me feel.

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's curator insight, January 29, 2013 9:41 PM

The 8 thinking moves associated with the development of understanding are laid out on this “map.”  You’ll notice there is no hierarchy or sequence to the moves as they often operate in tandem or association with one another as learners are building understanding.  Many teachers find the map helps them to teach and assess for understanding.  In addition the map identifies the thinking supported by the thinking routines.

Do teachers know best when it comes to Homework?

Do teachers know best when it comes to Homework? | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
The Case Against Homework: The truth, according to Sara Bennett and Nancy Kalish, is that there is almost no evidence that homework helps elementary school students achieve academic success and little more that it helps older students.

"Don't teachers know best when it comes to homework?

A:   No. When we started researching the subject, we were shocked to learn that:

Most teachers have never studied homework in their teacher education courses.Few are aware of the studies showing that homework has little or no correlation with academic success in elementary school or that overwhelming amounts of homework have a negative impact on learning in all grades.Few teachers have learned how to devise good assignments, how to decide how much homework to give, and whether to involve parents. In fact, according to Gerald LeTendre, associate professor of education policy studies at Pennsylvania State University. "There's no adequate training of new teachers in homework at all. It's considered an afterthought." Just as alarming, once they begin teaching, they get little guidance from their schools.Only 35 percent of (schools) actually have written homework policies.
