'An Industry of Mediocrity': Study Criticizes Teacher-Education Programs

'An Industry of Mediocrity': Study Criticizes Teacher-Education Programs | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
The effort to rank programs, by the National Council on Teacher Quality and "U.S. News & World Report," has been controversial since it started, in 2011.

Colleges of education are "an industry of mediocrity" that churns out unprepared teachers to work in the nation's elementary and secondary schools, according to a highly anticipated report.

The report, "Teacher Prep Review," describes the findings of a controversial effort to rate the quality of programs at 1,130 institutions nationwide that prepare about 99 percent of the nation's traditionally trained teachers.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, March 29, 2014 11:43 PM

This is one of those issues that feeds back and forth on itself. Colleges of education are an industry of mediocrity, but so is K-12 education. There is a total absence of leadership at the political and bureaucratic levels.

1. Why Do We Need Curators

2. What Is Digital Curation

3. Aggregation vs. Curation

4. It's All About Audience

5. How Do We Find Valuable Content

6. How Do You Decide What To Curate

James Jandebeur's curator insight, March 16, 2014 9:59 AM

According to Facebook's news page, the service has 1.23 billion active users, a little over 20% of the population of the world. Twitter has around 200 million. These services, or something like them, have become increasingly important in our lives, influencing the news media and a variety of public decision making processes. Between a need for security and utility, we need to start learning, then teaching, then learning some more, how to best use social media, and classrooms are not the only place where this needs to be done.

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it

In working with students, critical thinking encourages and promotes:

Humility to accept criteria that is not their own.Courage to defend their own criteria against others.Responsibility to contrast and take into account the appropriate information.Commitment to filtering out and separating valid from useless information.Respect for the group and for the individual when the time comes for debate and contrasting ideas.

To educate an individual in critical thinking is to educate him or her to be capable of governing or controlling their own personal and professional life and to be able to find answers and solutions to problems. It is the road to forming critical and responsible citizens who are capable of confronting the challenges of the future.

Interesting article. Great quote: It is not about questioning every information we get everyday, it is about being critical with the information that is relevant to us when we make up an opinion about something.

Excelente reflexão sobre a importância do Pensamento Crítico para a educação de cidadãos competentes. O que ele implica e o que promove.

Sharla Shults's curator insight, February 22, 2014 8:45 PM

So many students simply want the answer...no thinking involved, the easy way. We are doing our youth a tremendous injustice not emphasizing both the metacognitive and critical thinking processes. They need to be able to explore a problem, then analyze, explain, and evaluate it in order to survive as adults.

What If Kids Co-Created Customized Learning Pathways?

What If Kids Co-Created Customized Learning Pathways? | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
New tools are making it easier to customize learning for every student. Playlists, projects, and portfolios support big blocks, maker spaces, and flex schools. One thing I appreciate about the Christensen Institute definition of blended learning is that it stresses student agency by requiring "student control over time, place, path, and/or pace."
